Hunker Down

Now I know what "hunker down" means in the normal usage, but it is what everyone who is not evacuating the Panama City FL area is talking about doing in order to survive. So is there anyone from the area that can tell me what that type of hunkering down looks like? In particular I wonder how it enables you to survive under ten feet of water or while your house is off its foundation and coming apart.

I am praying for the region. I have family there who can't leave due to job responsibilities. They told us that their employer has a facility that is built to
withstand the storm. I am not sure about the exact location and it's elevation. You have a very valid point!

At this point, I don't think that has happened. Maybe a bit later, or maybe not.
Here in central NY we don't have to deal with storm surges, or hurricanes. Winter blizzards are our biggest weather event, or perhaps a violent summer T storm. We have lots of firewood and a diesel generator, 100gal. fuel storage for my tractors plus a pantry full of garden crops to carry us through any prolonged winter event. I guess that we have "Hunkering Down" capabilities built into our lifestyle.

When I lived in the hurricane area (Gulfport, MS) I made sure I didn't have to worry about the storm surge. I hunkered down by buying a house at a 54 ft. elevation. The first hill out of Gulfport. Had plenty of water stocked up. Had wood heat if needed. Just had to hope for the best with the wind. Had one hurricane pass right overhead and only lost a window in the shed door. Went without power for seven days. The water surge is the biggest danger.

you would have to be well below the 100 year flood plane to get 10 ft of water in your house--my house on Long Island south shore is 11 ft above the 100 year flood plane so I have never evacuated and I built my house and it is well anchored to the foundation
