John Deere H Problem

When I go and try to start my JD H, I have to crank and crank on it and it will pop once but it sounds like a shot gun going off. What is going on here?

Cap on the mag could be cracked and have moisture in it so the spark is jumping inside it.

From the exhaust, like a backfire?? I'd say intermittent spark from the mag. After cranking you have several fuel charges in the stack. Once you have spark they all ignite.

Mike - yes it sounds like a backfire out of the exhaust. What should I do or how do I fix the problem if any? Thanks.

My H did the same thing. Used it on a Saturday, and Monday it wouldn't start. Occasional backfire. So, had my SIL tow me. Same thing with towing it, except it backfired so hard one time it blew the rain cap off and hit me in the left lens of my glasses. Knocked the lens out, and gave me a little bit of a black eye. Happened very quick, no time to duck. Darn flap didn't go up in the air, it was a line drive to my face! Ended up being a broken impulse spring in the mag. No clue why it decided to break sitting for a couple days other than it is 78 years old.

As a kid we would be driving a pickup, turn the key off, wait a few seconds and turn the key back on.
That gave time for gas to fill the muffler, shotgun time, big bang. One time the big bang blew the muffler off. Hard time telling dad what happened.

I told this story because your exhaust is full of gas as you crank and crank. Then a spark finally arrives and shotgun big bang.

You have a mag issue. Spark not getting where it's needed on time.

Or you could have an exhaust valve sticking so when you crank and crank you are filling the muffler with gas. Close one of the petcock at a time and crank. If your exhaust valves are not sticking open, it should be very difficult to crank.

In the 1960's I went to an auction when I was in HS and bought a JD H for $100 with 2 row cultivator. Wish I still had it. It was inside barn when barn burnt.

Post back and tell us what you find.

I think mine had a petcock valve, compression release, one for each cylinder. I may be wrong. That was over 50 years ago.
