Model 101 IH self propelled combine

Our association has a Model 101 IH self propelled combine. I am trying to find out if it had a 6 volt or 12 volt electrical system and if it had a negative ground or a positive ground.

Thanks

That model was made from 1956 to 1961, so I'm gonna GUESS the earlier ones may have been 6 Volt (+) ground and the later ones 12 Volt (-) ground, so you're gonna have to figure out what you've actually got.

Look for clues, the shape of the battery box, if 12 Volts, it will likely be more rectangular, and note which of the cables appears to have the larger (+) terminal hole, the I.D. tags on the starter and generator (IF the originals are still there) likely will give voltage. Probably Delcos, I.D tags on 6 Volt units had a black background, 12 Volt units had an I.D. tag with a red background, plus Volts was listed.

Also, does the coil look original? Any numbers on it?

If equipped with lights, bulbs should have industry-standard part numbers on them and maybe even be marked with their voltage.

Post back and let us know what clues you find!

Thanks for the reply. The coil is not original. There are no lights on the machine. I will check the starter and generator for the tags. They look to be the originals.
I have an operators manual that appears to cover all the years manufactured. In that manual there is no reference to the voltage of the battery. The only reference I seen in the manual was a schematic of the electrical system and it showed a positive ground. We have had the engine running on a 12 volt battery a number of times. I had the engine running about 6 weeks ago and it started fine. About two weeks ago I tried to start it and I had no luck. I am getting gas to the carb, but it just will not fire. I checked the coil and it meets the ohm readings that are suggested for the primary and secondary readings (per my online inquiries). I have checked the coil cable and there appears to be an electrical flow through it. I am trying to methodically eliminate potential problems.

I will let you know what I find.

Thanks
John

I wish you were close, as mine is no longer used, taking up barn space & the time to start it every year or two (guilt of neglect I guess?). I really needs a good home, as it runs so well.
All signs are that it was 6v, pos gnd, as the gentleman who owned it before me, converted it to 12v & put Air conditioning on it, and when charging, the ammeter shows discharge and when not charging shows charging. Also, the coil is original (same as my Farmall SMTA) and measures 1.35 Ohms, which is correct for a 6v coil. Me combining oats several years ago:

By any chance do you know what kind of motor was used. According to what I have able to find out IH used the BD220 truck engine. Does that agree with what you might know about the engine?

don't know the displacement, but 30 years ago when I needed a water pump, I told the parts man that the engine looked exactly like the IH BlackDiamond engine in my Dad's ~late 40s, early 50s International truck and he got one and it worked for the combine.
