How did I do without...

...the step upgrade for the 86 series IH tractors?

I couldn?t even count the number of times I have fallen out of that cab when doing chores, especially in the winter with bibs on. I?m sure not getting any younger and one of these days my ?tuck and roll? won?t work. I finally ordered the step upgrade with a handle and the door cylinder upgrade. Holy cow. I always have loved that tractor but getting in and out was such a deal compared to the Deeres. I?m not sure why, but I always intend on getting something like that and put it off. If you haven?t yet, get the K&M setup and don?t look back.

My 11-year old son just about did a tumble out of the 986 door the other week during wheat harvest. He was wearing shorts and when he went to get out the shift lever poked up his pant leg and hooked him. Not sure why the lever had to protrude out into your path when in the park position instead of being towards the back and out of the way.

Yes that step up grade really helps. The door cylinder is even better. The original did not allow the door to open very far. The IH engineers on the 86 series really dropped the ball on ergonomics. Poor doors, bad gear shifter location, and terrible ride yes the tractor we all dreamed of. LOL

These issue cause me to trade off eight month old IH 1486 on a JD 4440. My wife refused to drive that IH 1486 another spring doing tillage. Said it beat her to death in the cab.

Speaking of TERTIBLE Ergonomics, anyone ever run a Deere 4010? PTO lever extended back way behind the instrument panel when pto was Off, first thing I always did when getting on that #$&%@ tractor was shovel that lever forward, engage the pto, get that lever to heck out of my way.

Now, lets discuss who's idea it was to run the left side lift for the frt mounted cultivator off the 3-pt hitch rockshaft with a steel pipe 2 inches in diameter about 4 inches above the platform just back from the edge an inch or two. Just high enough to catch your last foot when getting off and do a FACE PLANT right into the cultivator. Dad had a Koehn tractor cab on the thing for a while, had to get on/off on the left only, but when I cultivated I always got on/off the right side.

And what about them sound guard cabs on the 4230. If you throw your empty pop can on floor front right, you can not get it. Have to get the floor broom and try and hook it out of there.
