My Dodge 3500 automatic transmission shifts up through the gears when cold. After it warms up, when I start off in low range, it stays there until I let up on the gas, then shifts to the next higher gear. Any body experienced this? The pick up is only used to haul my mowing tractor, not much else. It sits most of the fall, and winter. Stan

I have a 99 and about a year ago it started that and it was on its way out sorry to say.We were in AZ and 3900.00 bucks later we were on our way home.Have you ever had it serviced, that vintage tranny has to have the bands adjusted when serviced.Mine had been serviced regularly but had 200k on it and was wore out.

Hard to diagnose without a scanner so you can check for codes and watch data. The trans is computer controlled in the 96’s.

Just based on what you’ve described, I suspect the throttle position sensor might be changing as the truck warms up.

Some Chrysler trannies had a sticking control valve issue, plastic parts inside. Simple and inexpensive to repair, if that is it.

Sounds just like my 1996 2500 did. Mine was intermittent. Mine seemed fine when towing though. I just kept driving it as I could tell what was happening and let off the gas or shift manually and it would then go into next gear. I could see if someone kept on the gas it could get between gears and then slam into a gear and likely bust stuff. I added some lucas trans. stuff and it seemed to be a little better. Several tranny shops said that was a common problem and it needed rebuilt as a seal on a main shaft ? leaked and would not build pressure right to shift. I sold mine while it still had some value left.

I would have the bands adjusted and the governor pressure sensor replaced. Then the throttle valve cable adjustment needs to be checked. The adjustment on the cable being too tight can cause the problem you describe.
