I thought I would post a pic of what I use to remove broken taps,, I have broken two or three and used them on and at least another five for friends who broke theirs,, a Very simple thing to do with these, takes about 30 seconds to remove one as long as no one has tried to remove them with a punch,, and YES I still got the broken part out for them too lol I seen some guys said they do not work,, well I am at a 100% success rate so I have to say they work Very well for me,, if they do not for you ok I do seem to be able to do many jobs with ease others struggle with so I guess it all works out and why my friends and customers call when something tough comes up lol the one in the shots I broke using a 3/8" drive air ratchet to thread a seat in a hyd control valve still in the tractor and was the only way to get access to the seat without removing the valve,, I got in a hurry and put things in a bind and snapped off the 3/8" pipe tap, 30 seconds later I had the broken tap out easy job

I don't think they are universal size you buy the size you need by the tap size.

Jury is still out I don't think it will get'em all....

Looks like a good tool. I have broken a few taps in my life, and have limited success removing them. I found if the proper size drill is used, and good lube, sharp tap, and don't be in a hurry it usually works. Stan

When I worked in machine shops we used those type extractors with mixed success. Often when machine tapping holes and the tap breaks is "shatters" in the hole with multiple breaks. The extractors rarely worked in those instances. If the tap snapped off cleanly at or near the top of the hole, then they worked most always.

One thing we often did when machine tapping in tougher metals like stainless and worse, was to grind a groove with a cut-off wheel around the shank of the tap just above the threads. Then if it bound up and broke it almost always would break at the groove leaving something to grab with Vise-Grips to work the broken tap out.

You are correct they are sized for the tap, we always used Kerosene to help loosen the broken pieces and turn back and forth until
you feel it start come out. I always had pretty good luck with them.

I have a set of them,, I think there was three sets they had on the truck,, the one in the pic is either the biggest I have or one size down from the biggest

I agree with you 100%,, I am sure every time I have broken one I was turning one too fast and or in a bind and knew better,, like the one in the pic, I had already tapped and pulled two sets of the seats and this was the last one I had to do,, being in a hurry has gotten me more times than I dare say lol

I could sure see that doing a power taping so to speak,, I have seen taps fracture like you say when i went to far and they bottomed in the hole,, Not fun at all
