I found this old picture. The exact date is unknown but it would have been in Mississippi County Missouri around Wolf Island. Jacob Kuehner lived from 1861 to 1936.

Interesting, multiple horse teams on binders. Would have thought a team of two would have been sufficient, and far more controllable.

Team of 2 Clydesdales was OK on the flat but if any hills involved, needed 3! Used to keep a big roan gelding just to help out on the binder - 2 mares did all the rest!

Guess the seed corn ball caps were the death of wide brim hats.

Nobody in the picture is identified so we don't know if any of the boys are family or hired help. We do know one of the sons of Jacob Kuehner continued to farm and had a farm near Anniston, MO. This is the son, Andrew Kuehner which was the uncle of my wife's mother, pictured on the tractor.

It wasn't hilly there. It was Mississippi river bottom land.

This pic of my great uncle Karl (Charlie) Hobetzeder shows he had 4 horses hitched up to pull the binder. That ground drive bull gear took a bit of horsepower to run the binder.

My dad, born in 1885 told me that on the Baker plantation at Sikeston, Missouri, they used 6 on a 7 foot binder 3 abreast with a rider on a lead mule
