Well, how do I get a CDL so I can get a job open to prior or current federal employees only? I am a retired rural route carrier.
The posting expires in a few days. I've been in communication with the hiring agency. They tell me you need to have the CORRECT CDL before you even apply.
If I took the CDL test now, the wait time between the permit and the CDL test is 14 days minimum.
I am going to take the bus exam. But that won't get me the permit I need for the handicapped wheelchair vehicle I will be driving. And, NO they won't let me use one of there's to take the test.
Any ideas? DOUG
 
I know you can rent a truck to take a CDL driving test,and probably a CDL driver to their with you.But probably not much you can do about the time span between the temp license and the permanent one.Mark
 
When I did my CDL road test, instead of using a state examiner I hired a private examiner to go with me. Might check into that.
 
I didn't know you could hire a private examiner instead of the state. Will it need to be done at one of the state locations or privately?
 
When I got my CDL 25 or so years ago (basic CDL; no endorsements), I paid a fee of I think $125. That included a fairly short classroom instruction followed by hands-on training in their semi, and I took the test in their semi with trailer. Can't even remember now how I found the place.

Not sure how fast it can be done. When I got mine in the early 90s, I went with another driver, and had a learning permit. After a while of driving with him, he let me take the KW T800 and Super Hopper for the exam ride. Crowder had the various layouts for backing, parking, etc. IIRC, examiner was one of theirs. I believe you have to take the exam in the vehicle type you're going for.n HTH.
 
To take the bus road test he needs a bus. Just a thought,can you take the road test in a school bus? If you can is there a private bus owner near you? You might be able to rent a bus and driver for the test. Some of the school districts have independent bus owners.
 
Well you need to first take the written test and get your CDL permit. Then ,like you posted, you have to wait a minimum if 14 days by Federal rules/laws to take the skills test. You then will need to rent or borrow the type of vehicle you need the CDL for to take the test with. Then you will need a current CDL holder to ride with you anytime your driving that vehicle with just your permit. That person will have to have the correct CDL for the vehicle as well. They will have to ride/drive you to your test as well.

All of this takes some time and effort. This is why a CDL has some "value" to have. If any Tom, Dick, Or Harry could just walk in and get the CDL then it would be meaningless/worthless.

So if your thinking of getting/applying for jobs that require the CDL to apply you going to have to get the CDL FIRST.

One way to do this easier is some private companies will help you get your CDL to work for them.
 
I have had a CDL since they first came out and before that I had what would be the same as a CDL from the age of 16 due to what I did as a job in Mississippi. Just renewed my CDL yesterday here in Missouri. I plan to keep it till I can no longer drive period
 
You have to be sure they are approved by the state, but he came out to my place for the test drive and gave me the papers to show I passed to bring to DMV for my CDL license. Written test was taken at DMV.
