4010 front tires - 10.00-16 airplane

I have a 1960's JD 4010 that I use frequently in the woods or brushy areas. I do not use it for crops. Therefore, the front tires pick up a lot of thorns. I have been using tubeless tires so that I can plug the thorn holes on my own without having to remove a tube. I have been using 4 rib tires to give me as much thickness (4 ribs vs 3) as I can get, but I still get thorns in the areas between the ribs. I need a new set of tires 10.00-16 now, but I don't want to pay the cost to have them foam / no flat filled, as I don't plan to keep the tractor forever. I have read some comments about possibly using used airplane tires. Has anyone used them and if so what type of success have you had.

There is an outfit in texas(Gensco?) that sells airplane tires for farm use.however,by the time you buy them and pay shipping, you could foam a 'lot' of tires. For a tractor you are going to sell, foam might be cheaper.

Might try lots of tire slime. I bought a tractor with foamed tires. I can't believe someone would do that to a tire on purpose. That would be my last option.

My father bought used refurbished airplane tires for a piece of logging equipment, a short wood skidder that he pulled behind a JD 350 crawler, they worked great. I remember they were 24 ply and it said do not exceed 250 mph on the side. I think the tires came from Knapton tire co near the Minneapolis airport. I would thing there would be places that recycle used airplane tires near any major airport, when they are no longer safe for an airplane they still have a lot of life left. He had a very capable friend that made up custom wheels for them as they were only about 16 inch rims. The rims came from Pioneer wheel and rim and the friend made the centers. Why can I remember all these details? It was 50 years ago!

I have aircraft tires on my 4020 that get run through mesquite brush and have not had a flat yet, I got mine from a company called GENSCO, website is noflats.com. My tires have been on about 3 years now with there sealer also.

Dad has sold many used C-130 tires for farm use. They are really common on batwing mowers. Don’t usually go flat, and with lighter loading,( like on a mower) they will hold the load even without air due to being 22 or 24 ply.

I will second the comments on Gensco tires. I got some 18 ply fronts for my 4020, and they work great. I got them mounted on new rims here in Houston, and I thought the price was really reasonable.

We had wagons blowing out regular 11/12L 15 tires in 8 ply so put some airplane tires on and solved the problem. We were told to not exceed 50 PSI in them. They were 16 or more ply tires. We found if you check the pressure each year in the beginning of the season and then didn't exceed the 50 PSI level they lasted pretty good. We still have both sets on wagons in use today. Get the ones already mounted if you go wityh the Genesco ones. If I remember right they paid the shipping on them. We did have one problem with one tire we put over the 50 PSI and it blew the beads over the rim edge ruined the tire and rim. Called them and traded the set for the next size bigger and had no problems since. This was about 5 years ago now. I think they paid the freight both ways on the tries.

I sold a lot of those gensco tires. Stopped selling them because we could not get them to hold air. What's the secret???? Would love to know.

Toughest tires I ever installed were some old used 7.50x16 truck tires on the front of the Cockshutt 40. They were ten ply tires and a bit of a challenge to install on a drop centre rim without proper equipment but we got it done. That was in the mid 1970s and those tires are still on the tractor and looking good.
Regarding aircraft tires, if anybody remembers the Cockshutt combines from the early 1950s, they had those "diamond stud tread" aircraft tires installed right from the factory. On the driving wheels.
