Awhile back I was considering buying a 1970 Ford F600 truck. The seller had phoned me and said it had a bad engine oil leak and did I still want it? I asked for advice here. Most said buying something that old WOULD have some oil leaks, etc. Anyway I bought it. The seller kept it several more weeks and when I picked it up he'd done lots and never asked that I should pay a cent more than we'd agreed. (I did give him a hundred dollar bill as a wedding gift.) Seller said the bad engine oil leak turned out to be the valve cover.
Well, I got the truck home (about a 75 mile trip). It backfired all the way, but ran fairly well. On the road one of the brakes began "grabbing" so, as I'm sure you can imagine, I drove very carefully. I've now replaced points, condenser, timed it and found a loose ground wire in the distributor. Also have replaced one front wheel cylinder and a stopped up brake hose. I'm sure there'll be more, but for now, it is doing great!
Thanks to all for the advice! kelly
