OT---Have 9 tractors----Have an oil fired boiler and a big outdoor wood fired boiler. Looking for something in PROPANE that we can use for these days when we need a little heat, but don't want to fire the big dogs.
Maybe two units that would run off a 500 gal. propane tank. Units that could be fired up to take a chill off than turned off......no looking for cheap--want good and safe and dependable. Thank you

Google
Dayton Inferred Heater.

Been using a couple hanging from the ceiling for over twenty years.

Red and understand there uses, drawbacks and limitations.
Then see if they will work for you.

My son and I both acquired gas house
furnaces that were removed when new was
bought. His is Nat gas and mine is propane.
No trouble with either. Talk to your
friendly furnace guy. Gas vent pipe required
for chimney. For most new furnaces bought, a
serviceable unit is removed.

I would second dat and will say don't get caught up in repairing them down the road... They don't last a lifetime you may get 5 plus more years out of a 10 year old propane unit sooner are later the heat chamber is gonna burn out its then junk...

That is a vague request. Most HVAC contractors will size up your needs and give you a free estimate. Their questions will help you nail down your requirements.

When our HVAC system went out during the recession, and we didn't have the funds to replace right away, we used 3 oil filled heaters, and the wood stove, for a about 5 winters.

For those in between times, when it was too hot to fire up the wood stove and keep it going (((I like to be warm, but 85 degrees plus inside is a bit much...LOL)))), but a bit more than the oil heaters could take on their own, we had a 3 (panel), ventless, propane heater like you'd hang on the wall. The one at the link is similar to the one we've got.

I supplied mine off a 40 pound tank, and typically got a winter and a half, to two winters out of a tank.

I built my house around zone heating/cooling. The main heat source is a whole house wood stove but for those days like you mention, or for remote parts of the house I use wall mounted Infrared heaters of varying BTUs of 5 to 35k hooked to my 500 gallon Propane tank. Where I want quiet safe heat, like in a bedroom, I use portable, electric, oil filled, radiators, which are getting to be much more popular today vs when I bought my first one 20 years ago.

The infrared heaters do not require venting and work much much better than an open flame free standing unit like Dearborn makes/made (don't know if they still do) which works better if vented.

I have had a little catalytic non-vented unit in my shop for 10 years. I leave it on all the time set for 50 degrees. It is nice too be able to go in anytime and go right to work. It heats just 16x22x10. If I need to heat the main part of the building I use my propane salamander.

Mine is pretty air tight. Can't even smell the sulphur. Spec says it consumes 99.9% of the fumes. Has a CO sensor for your protection. Never had one shut off for that and I have a Kiddie brand Carbon Mono. sensor on the wall which has never recorded any digits except 0. Press to test works and it winks at you every 30 seconds telling you it's on the job. Very different critters from the open flame units.
