In consideration of Leroy's CL complaint.

I took on to try to get CL to split "Farm & Garden" into two categories - "Farm" and "Yard & Garden". The only way CL will listen and do this is for others to also chime in. The link goes to the discussion forum where I posted. Please go on and upvote or comment further support.

If the link doesn't work or you want to find it yourself, go to CL, click the title "Discussion forums" to the left of the "for sale" section, then click "CL-Categories" about halfway down the first column. It's not a regularly used section, so my topic should be at the top.

CL added the "heavy equipment" category a few years ago. I've found many listings for FARM machinery in that category.

If you are looking for something specific, just do a search for that item.

I've also found farm machinery listed under the "general", or miscellaneous category.

I agree that CL is only as good as the user posting the ad. I just think that "farm" and "garden" are distinct enough that they can be separated and maybe get people to pick one for their lawn mowers and leaf rakes and the other for their tractors and hay rakes. It'll still be up to the user to make good ads.

Up here in Canada, our version of CL is Kijiji, a huge buy-sell site along with all the advertising. I've
always thought that their categories for listing are archaic. And sometimes I see things advertised in a
certain category that I can never seem to find when I want to post something for sale myself. I'm sure they
have received the same kinds of concerns that you mention, yet they don't seem to do anything to improve the
categories or make them more easily available.

Cannot post a comment as I do not have an acount with them. It should be Farm, then Lawn & garden, Then pets with a farm livestock section.

Probably not much help but I do not search by category in online sites. What I do is type in the key words ("example Oliver cultivator) Then if some wingnut listed one in jewelry I still can see it. I do use some filters like, private owner, in USA only, etc.

Splitting the category could create even more confusion than there is now. Leave it as-is.

If they cannot realize a pot belly pig is different than a combine there is something wrong with their brain.

That maybe true.

IMHO, Craig's List is an just a free online garage sale, one of may available. Most ads are posted to dispose of things no longer wanted at whatever price the seller wants to try. Many sellers don't know a lot about the items that they are selling, so the KISS method works best for most sellers. Some times it does take creative searching to find very specific items, and there may not be any for sale on that specific day.

I for one sure do not see the problem, you don,t like the add just skip it. Lots of things sell faster in L& G because that is where LOTS of folks brose. Juts type what you are looking for in the search block and let it do the work is you do not want to brose.

Several years ago there was a Jaxed Mash site that was really good for browsing for old cars and other items. A big percentage of their adds came from craigslist. For some strange reason craigslist didn't like that, sued and won. My little brain just can't understand why craigslist didn't like Jaxed Mash helping them out by gathering adds from all across the country and putting them in one convenient place.
