I posted on 'tales' about my son's Ford Probe that has lost 5th gear, but only got 1 response. He has read up on the internet and has been told that the transmission does not have to be totally disassembled to replace 5th gear.I don't know if they mean the gear, and synchronizer,or even what parts such as shift detent it may need.Since it will need a clutch soon, and he has no other car I am looking for someone who has experience, and maybe a line on parts.I am a competent transmission repair man,so I can do the work, just unfamiliar with a Probe. So thanks for any help,Mark.

I think the OD is in the tail casting. Might be a threaded retainer on the shaft. Taking it out will make sense out of it. Jim

I have the shop manual for my '93 Mazda MX-6. It shows reverse and 5th gears as the first assembly to be removed after the "rear cover". It does not specifically say they can be serviced with the trans still on the car, but it looks like the rear cover is separate from the output shafts. My Mazda is an automatic, so I can't go look to see. I can scan some of the pages and email them if you want. Let me know ASAP because I am leaving for Nicaragua tomorrow for 8 days. Email is open.

I replaced the 5th gear syncro on a Mazda or Mitsubishi once, can't remember now, but it was under a sheet metal cover on the side of the trans. Did not even take trans out.

Egad someone is still driving one of those ! I remember when those things came out, and to think Ford wanted to kill off the Mustang and replace it with the Probe. Lots of memories of those cars, none fond. Not much good came from Mazda back then. I hope you get it fixed.
