Vegetable Tractor Info

Hello, while researching tractors specific to vegetable production a friend mentioned this forum. Gearing up for vegetable production on a field scale. So far I am looking of an older tractor with a creeper gear setup and possibly high clearance or high crop.

The Farmall 140 or international 274 look like good machines, but are only set for one row cultivation. I am considering a wide bed system with multiple rows in it. Transplanter slow speeds will require a creeper speed setup.

Any input would be appreciated.

Located in the thumb of Michigan.

Thanks in advance.

The 140 and her sisters, 100 and super A , were the go to tractors for truck farming and raising tobacco here in Maryland. There are barns full of implements rusting away now that the tobacco business is dead. I'm not sure why you need to transplant so slowly. We had one on the back of a 140. A C or a Super C with 2 row cultivators would not be hard to find. Remember to cultivate 2 rows you have to plant in multiples of 2.

Google Hefty and/or John Blue tractors. Both were built similar to the Allis "G", ideal for truck crops. I believe that the John Blue was hydrostatic drive, giving you an extremely variable range of ground speed.

We have a case 1210 for doing field work, bedding, laying wide plastic, and transplanting wide beds, Hard to find a slow enough tractor for transplanting wide beds, The case has a good creeper gear. We also have a 140 for seed planting and cultivating. It is not slow enough to transplant.

I have no doubt that tens of thousands acres of tobacco were planted in NC with offset Farmalls their inception. If they are running right they will crawl right along with a transplanter, plant droppers, and water barrel just above idle. One could fit a C or Super C for a two row setup.

Sounds like you are looking for a mid-sized tractor to pull some larger multi-row equipment. Farmall built a number of mid sized hydrostatic tractors such as the 70, the 656 hydro and the Hydro 86. My neighbors had two similar but different model Hydros and the seemed to do well with no maintenance for many years.

I-H had milti-row cults for the Cub,A,B and C tractors would do up to 6 rows on 15in centers a cult for the 140 could be used for the same with a few brackets they mite of had one for the 140 also

I have a Hines H-1600 I use its an Allis G style tractor but has more clearance and has hydrastatic drive so it will go as slow as you want, also has hydraulic front and back great little
one row tractor. Also have a Massey Ferguson 220,has 26 HP with 3 ranges and 3 gears it will absolutely creep in 1st low.I usually run the tiller in 2nd middle range. Its 4ft wide and I plant
a lot of vegetables in 6ft wide rows to be able to till between the rows.
