Thinking about planting corn next year

I'm thinking about planting a few acres of corn next year. I want to pick it with a picker and thinking about selling it by the bag of ear corn for squirrels. I do have an outlet in Columbus so that might be a plus. Also would probably use some for hog feed too.Just wondering what you guys think.

About 6 years ago I started selling both shelled corn in 10lb and 50lb bags for the animal lovers. I also sell the ear corn in 10lb bags for the squirrel lovers. I pick out the biggest ears and sell a bag for $3.00. Lowes and others sell a 10lb bag for $7.50 +

sounds like lots of work and not much return. planting corn is expensive, just to get it in the ground, with enuff fertilizer just to make ears, if mother nature give you enuff rain. Now weeds in corn can be controlled but that cost money also and some knowledge of how to do it helps!

I've been thinking about doing the same thing. Keep is posted on how it works. Should be decent money in it if you can do the labor.

I live in Western Ky. I know a guy that raises about 30 acres of corn that he picks. Sells it all to deer hunters. He sells out within a month after he picks it. He gets 35$ per loader bucket. The bucket is a 5ft wide. He is making more than the guys shelling it. He picks with a 4 row self propelled uni-picker.

I have an uncle that does exactly what you are talking about. I'm not sure how many acres he plants but he bags it up and sells to the local co-op and to many individual buyers. During winter he picks good days and bags it up and put it on a wagon then oarks it inside. He laghs that he spent his whole life keeping deer out of the crops and still does, and then turn around and sell it to people to feed the deer.

I think there is plenty of money in it if you can get a market for it. Either by developing it or it comes to you. After all 10 pounds for $3.00 that is about 5-10 times the price of corn at the elevator.

That's the 1 draw back. I can do it as long as I don't have to do any physical labor. I will have help so I think I'll be OK , never know till you try LOL.

As others have said, more return that way than at the elevator. I have raised corn a while ago (30 years) and a picker is all I know, I've never owned a combine for corn so it won't be anything new just bringing it up from the far recesses of my mind.

Just DO NOT OVER DO IT, we don't want you back in the hospital, We want you on here. It is not like using your voice only to call sales when you can have others do all the lifting. How much lifting are you now allowed to do?

From what I understand, I can lift as much as I feel comfortable with, I haven't done any heavy lifting, my grandson jumps in and does that for me. I don't even lift 50lb bags of horse feed, He is a pretty good person and he watches out for the old man.
