O.T. Ford built Powerstroke

I know they have been out several years by now. What is the report on the Ford Built Powerstroke engine. I know they reversed the airflow, putting the turbo or turbos and exhaust manifold inside the Vee on top of the engine and the intake manifolds on the outside of the heads. Pretty radical design change. Just curious! Thanks, Roy

We own one in a 2011 F550. Catastrophic failure at 98,000 miles, over $8000 to replace, only averages 6 miles per gallon (with both engines). Back to gas engines.

I bought a used one 2 years ago. A 2011 model with 163000 miles on it. It has 203000 on it now. Problems have been minimal. I did have to replace the starter, which was kinda pricey. The emissions stuff on it is a a PITA, but all of the newer diesels have that. More power and better fuel mileage than the 7.3. All things considered, I'm pretty happy with it.

I Bought a new F250 Super Duty in 2011 w/6.5 dual turbo in it. 0 problems with the engine or transmission. Problem with air conditioning this spring to the tune of 1500. It's going back to the dealer next week A.C. doesn't get cold again. This time on their dime (of course it will be something else this time). My fuel mileage isn't bad at all, about 18 empty @ 70 and if 25' gooseneck is loaded the fuel mileage will drop @ 70. but it will pass anything on the road loaded or empty. It's so much fun passing the black smoking Dodges LOL.

My brother and I have 3 of the 6.7 powerstrokes for our business. A 2013, a 2014, and a 2016. The older 2 have close to 60,000 on them now with no issues. The 14 averages 13mpg, it's never unhooked from a dump trailer and always has a load on its ladder rack so I can overlook that. The other 2 tow, but not constantly and they don't have ladder racks or tool boxes messing up aerodynamics. They get 16+ mpg, 18 on highway trips. Lots of power, 0 smoke, and very quiet. I am curious to see how the emissions crap holds up when they get more miles on them. But no issues yet.

I am on my second one, traded 2011 with 140K, only problem was leak in EGR cooler that got replaced under warranty, the 2016 has 50K, no issues.

per the forums....

the first year 2011 had problems with the radiator and expansion... that was fixed...

All... had problems burning up the aft sensor on the exhaust during long regens,, however a recall fixed that problem.

hard brake discs on the front will/can squeal...

my 2013 is only used for hauling 10k to 30k loads.. (yes I know).. and no problems so far but again, only gets moved to haul hay, tractors, or equipment, so when its used, its heavy. I only have 22000 miles on it, as my other vehicles do all the daily light duty work. Best mpg has been 18 on the few times of no trailer, usually 17.x is more common... The 40' goose is 7000 lbs empty, average has been 10.3 mpg, but again,, one way the gooseneck is empty, back again is full with a load. So every trip is almost always the goose.. Few long trips to pick up a bucket or smaller equipment in the bed only, had yielded 16 to 17 mpg for the most part.

I didn't realize they had been in production that long. Evidently a pretty good design since I had not heard any bad reports. Thanks for the replies.

Btw... forgot to say..

dually crewcab with 4:10 gears and 6 speed auto....

and the 800 lbs of torque really pulls very well....over my old 2001 dodge 5.9hipo Cummins 500lbs of torque... and stops even way way better... In the tow mode... the whole truck changes personality. when on cruise, it will down shift on its on,, going down hills to keep the speed in check.. will auto down shift and engine brake with out you doing anything unusual other than pushing the brake pedal. The tranny hard locks and moves the shift points up over normal mode. Pretty impressive if you not used to the newer models and their towing-assist- built-in-software.
xl trim is extremely quiet compare to ALL my other vehicles, and radio is easily listened to under full load. Quieter than my wife's car...

I wonder why the engineers did that. Maybe so they could use one turbo instead of two smaller ones. I still like the Cummins engine the best because of the fuel mileage or maybe Cummins owners are less honest in reporting their fuel mileage.

My cummins has 3.55 gears in it and thus ran consistantly higher mpgs, especially empty... however it was rated to pull 13,500lbs of trailer, and computer controlled fueled accordingly... and believe me,, when you exceeded that, you ran out of power. As I could get 19mpg easily,, and up to 21 mpg if I really milked it and keep it below 68 mph... With a tow chip it did perform better, but again, would still not pull big loads... and forget stopping..

I do agree there is a huge difference between 2001 models and 2013 models... so much that you cant believe the difference..

I wonder if the dodge had a 4:10 rear end, would it have done better pulling. And the ford has two over drive gears in it to compensate for the 4:10 ratio..
