JD 345 Mower Very strange thing happens

I have a JD 345 mower with 20 hp Kawasaki water cooled engine. Was mowing along no problems running smooth all at once a big puff of blue smoke comes out of exhaust,as if you were fogging something, motor dose not skip a beat. Mow for another half hour or so and it does it again. Finished mowing checked the oil, not down at all. Runs smooth at full speed and idle with no smell of using oil from the exhaust.
WHAT COULD BE CAUSING THIS? Got me stumped.

Hello FWB in KS,

Oil is getting in the combustion chamber. Too much oil? A slow oil return which will fill the valve cover and seep in to the combustion chamber through the valve guide. Time to take a look?

Hello FWB in SK,

Here is another. Bet you it happens at a point where tractor leans left or righf, OR...... up or down a slope.? Do you remember where it happened?

What type crankcase ventilation does that have?

Typically there is a tube to the air intake just before the carb. Sometimes oil can blow through the tube.

I don't know how that engine is set up, sometimes there is a check valve, filter element...

Any chance the oil is overfull? Gas contaminated?

FWB, in addition to what the others have suggested also check your air filter. If it's dirty to the point of being clogged the engine could be starving for air and pulling it from the crank case along with some oil causing it to smoke. I just saw that issue with a friend's mower. I changed the air filter and now no more smoke or the excess oil consumption he was experiencing. Good luck!

Hello dieselade,

He said blue smoke out of the exhaust. Typical of oil into the combustion chamber,

Guido.

Well, when a Briggs does that it usually has a blown head gasket. Or bad rings.

How is your oil level? Its not over full and no gas in it is there?
Gas will thin the oil and then it will work through the crankcase breather and then the thin oil usually goes through the engine in spurts.
