Installing oil seals

A whisp of #2 permatex on tho outer diameter, and oil if it a loan seal. If stacking seals, I pack the space between them with chassis or corn head grease to make sure
the outer seal has lubrication. Jim

Technically, you don't need to put anything on the painted seals (normally a light green paint), but whether it's painted or bare, I typically wipe some 515
around the OD, some oil or grease on the ID, and will often pack grease or Vaseline, between the OD and ID (on the inside) to help keep the spring in place.

It's best to know the seal type before smearing something on them, some seal material can react adversely to certain lubricants. Some seals must be installed dry too.

Most of the time, a seal should only be lubed with whatever lube it's retaining. Double lip seals can get a thin layer of grease between the seal lips. No lube is needed on the OD of metal seals but rubber coated seals need lube on the OD though.
