Garden tractor

Got all of my field work done. Decided it was time to work in the garden. As soon as the implements touch the dirt I have to raise them again. Can't decide if I need a bigger garden or smaller tractor.

I don't see anything wrong with your JD M. When I was a kid I purchased a JD H for $100 with 2 row cultivator. It went up in smoke when the barn caught on fire in the 60's.

If I had a need for a small garden tractor, I would seriously consider the JD M over my old hand crank, hand clutch JD H.

This is the M's younger sibling. A 420. I'm not going to stop using it in the garden. It's just a little over kill for this small of a space.

It did get a few hours this year pulling a kba disk in the field.

Don't forget that there was a job for all the small tractors and many of them worked all day at that job and are still here.Try that with some of what they sell for small jobs today.

I have two garden areas I disc with my Farmall 300 and 10' transport disc. The bigger area is around 30'x100'. I know what you mean. A lot of up and down ! Nice tractor. Farmer next to the farm I grew up on had a jd 40. He bought it new and always kept it inside. I last saw it around 10 years ago and still looks great. Farmer had passed around 15 years ago and the widow will not sell it. Said she plans on giving it to a local tractor association. I really would like it !

Maybe the Red crowd will post some pictures of Farmall Cub cultivating. That offset seat and clear view of ground meant tight to plant row weed control- sure beat walking rows of sweet corn, bush beans with hoe in hands, sore feet from new shoes. RN

I have cultivators. But they are for a 40 or early 420. My rockshaft arms don't have the part to attach the pushrods.

I know these things are work horses. I've raked thousands of acres hay with it. Tank of gas would last all day. Now it putts in the garden and bush hogs a couple acres of grass.

Hi, when I was about 14 or 15 my dad took a cub in trade. It had a side mount sickle mower 5 ft swath. My brother drove a David Brown with a 7 ft mower and when cutting a field I would catch up to him and have to wait for a corner to pass. I mowed a lot with it. I was very sad when my dad sold it. When I was about 35, I saw one for sale with mower, cultivators, blade, discs etc. I bought it and only had a city lot. I still have it now on my orchard. Ed Will Oliver BC

The only Green tractor I have is a JD275 garden tractor, 48 inch mower and 30 inch tiller. My neighbor comes to till my garden with his 5 ft tiller and Massey. If he ever passed, I'll have to use my JD tiller.

If I could find a use for a JD M or 420 I would consider having one.
Like your JD, my farmall C runs on fumes. It can mow the same amount of grass and use less gas than any riding mower. Not to mention a very smooth ride.

Glad to see some people still love using the old iron.
