We've had this tractor about 3 years now. Runs great, plenty of power but....I can't believe some of the engineering! As just about everyone says, the dash board is a nightmare! Plastic on an old diesel machine just will not hold up. So, my question is, has anyone replaced the parking brake on one of these that has the cab? Is it as bad as I think it's going to be? Thanks for the help!

Although I've never replaced the parking brake on a JD utility tractor I think the most difficult part would be R&R of rockshaft housing to access brake. Brake can be R& in segments that are bolted together. Have you attempted adjusting the parking brake?

"I've never adjusted it but there seems to be no adjustment left"?????
You don't want to replace that band unless it is really done for. Tx Jim might post a parts diagram to help show the basic adjustment procedure as follows:
Place the hand lever in the first notch
remove the square head plug in the top of the differential housing located next to the top link mounting boss
tighten the screw under this plug (using a large flat head screw driver) hand tight
at the underside of the diff housing toward the left final drive there is a set screw(Flat head) with a jam nut. Loosen the nut. tighten the screw hand tight, back off two turns, tighten jam nut.
Loosen the upper screw until the handbrake lever engages in the 3rd or 4th notch with a pull of 20 to 40 lb

Not sure what you are expecting for a 31+ year old machine that has been used and abused for thousands of hours around mud, manure , chemicals, UV exposure and vibration.
Try any other brand X tractor of the same vintage, are they problem free?

How do you determine from reading plowboy 1 post that his tractor has been exposed to manure & chemicals?

My perception doesn't comprehend those details.

Thanks to everyone for all your help. I tried to post a few replies but couldn't get thru for awhile. I have looked at the diagram, but I'm not sure that's my machine. Will look again. Mine goes from the lever on the right side, across under the dash, then back to the rear. There are 2 (?) "turnbuckles" for adjusting on this rod. Where it enters down into the rear, a small arm is keyed to a shaft and this arm bottoms out on the housing. If I can get at that cover to get inside to adjust, that would be great! The cab gets in the way of a lot of stuff. Thanks again.

Leave the turnbuckles alone. The screw under the plug that I mentioned is key#4 in the diagram (Thanks Tx Jim.)
BTW B&D has a "special " computer that sees all LOL!

The brake has been adjusted and works! Many thanks to Tx Jim and Tech 7. You guys saved me a lot of money and maybe saved somebody's life! I did have to jack the cab up about 1" to get the plug out. Now on to the seal for the power steering.
