Big fan of portable power.

I use my 3500 watt champion on wheels to power chainsaw and hedge trimmer more than back up power. However many people in country are out of power. Thanks to trees and last night storm that came through last night.

My portable generator exceeds my needs to power coffee pot, microwave, electric skillet, electric pressure cooker, not all at same time. It keeps my two refrigerators angle well goings.

No big deal for me to run cords through Windows and not on floor to trip over. I left old pump plumbed in when I had new well installed. I can easily run cord to basement and have water.

It's nice to camp out in house with generator. If it were really hot, I would use bedroom in basement. No AC needed there, 55 degrees most of the time.

People in city are out of power too.

I bought a CHEAP 4500 watt generator off of Amazon a couple years back. Haven't lost power during that time, and spent a good portion of that time going back and forth to Arkansas until Mom passed. I'll soon be firing (hopefully!) the thing up for the first time soon as my make-shift shop is a 24' van box - dry, secure and up off the ground. Have been wanting to use the generator, so will use that rather than stretch out 200' of extension cords! At least the van box is still on the truck for now, so can also move it closer to the power pole when needed.

But your post reminds me - what's the latest news on all that flooding? Haven't heard much said about it. ...Maybe I should ask in a separate post.

Like you I use my portable generator for all kinds of things, very handy. It ran almost continually for a week one summer with drop cords when our power was off. We have friends in town that bought a whole house generator that comes on automatically, hasn't been used yet and it's been several years.

I installed a 20 KW whole house propane fueled back up generator a couple of years ago. It ran for over 20 hours the first summer after I had installed it when a large oak tree fell over and took down a 17+ KV line about 1/4 mile from my place. The snapped off two of the 60' wooden poles and pulled the cross arms off of two more. The poles carried the local service beneath the high capacity lines above so everyone around was without power for hours.

I also use a 7500W portable generator to provide power away from the buildings. It fits nicely into the carryall on the back of one of my 8Nsand is handy to power my electric pole saw when I trim limbs from trees away from the buildings.

I bought the portable genset for $550 from HF and the electric pole saw for around $100 from NT. The combination is not much more expensive and much more versatile than a good Stihl gasoline powered pole saw.

Flooding isn't as bad as 2008. We got 9.5 inches in
10 days. Some roads are closed. School was canceled
Friday because buses couldn't get down country roads
that typically flood. Some water in fields, some
crops went under. No major damage like we had in
2008. Water level in river is slowly going down.

Crazy thing is a farmer to the south had his
irrigation pumping yesterday.

In 2008 we got 12 inches in about 12 hours. That
flooded homes that never flooded before. Those homes
didn't have flood insurance and they are sitting
empty. People walked away from them.

Dean,
It wouldn't make sense for me to install a hole house generator. I'm lucky to need back up power once a year. Last year it was an hour before Thanksgiving dinner. Needed back up power to finish cooking and pump water. House was full of guests too..

Glad I have the remote generator to save the day.

So I'm good, got my few hours of back up power for 2017.

BYW, I bought this generator off craigslist for $150. It was like new. I've more than got my money worth out of this unit. It's cheap to use too, about a gallon every 3 hours.

I like my 25Kw PTO powered unit on a trailer. It's big enough (and then some) to power my 220V stick welder (an ancient Birdsell that was my Dads) or my 220v MIG plus a compressor, tools, lights, whatever else I need to run all at the same time or the whole farm if the power is out. Once I add torches to the trailer and enclose it, I can pretty much guarantee that nothing will ever break down in the field again because when you have a way to fix something...it never breaks!!! :D

That's the mother of portable power. More
than I need. But I can see having a portable
welder.
