I have a fly wheel ring that is worn in a couple spots, there is no replacement one available I could flip it but would have to grind the inside radius and then each tooth for engagement or use as is but clock it differently. My question is could the worn teeth be welded back in and ground to the proper shape? If so then what to use and procedure? This is on a Ford ranger Diesel 121 tooth. Thanks Bob

Probably a better fix would be to just remove the ring gear and rotate it a little. Due to engine compression all engines almost always stop in one of 2-3 places, so that is where the teeth wear.

Welding and grinding WILL NOT work. The teeth would break after you try that. Just heat it up and rotate it to where the worn spots are in a different place. The worn areas show up where the engine stop on compression. So the starter engages in the same spots all the time and wear the ring gear there.

I disagree with JD seller that the teeth can't be welded. I have done it successfully to replace broken off teeth. And that was through the starter hole. Just regular mig or stick weld will work.

But in your situation, I would do as the others suggest and rotate the ring a bit.

Welded them up on my JD 720 diesel over 10 years ago and it is still working. I used a nickel rod I believe..

I would do some serious searching for a new one.

Turning it 90* will get it to stop on some fresh teeth so the starter will engage.

But think about it, the reason it always stops in the same 2 spots is because that is where the pistons are at mid stroke. Think about what is going to happen, the starter is going to engage on fresh teeth, then as compression builds, the starter will be in the range of the damaged teeth!

Turning it will buy some time, and you may have to do that if a new one can't be found, but...

Maybe turning it about 45* past the damage would be better?
