Is this story true ,or false?

So I now the local guy that has the Zetor franchise, and he was trying to sell me on the virtues of the Zetor tractor. In the process , he mentioned that Zetor builds the John Deere 5000 series tractors for JD . And that they are basically just a Zetor tractor , built to JD specks, painted green and badged Deere . And Zetor builds and sells the exact same model , with their own colours and name.Is this true , or false ? Bruce

They made some models for John Deere at one time don't know if they still do . What he didn't tell you is they are the lowest model Deere you could buy built so Deere couple compete with the cheap junk other companies sell

Zetor marketed certain models of their tractor for Deere in a few Latin American countries where Deere had no marketing and Zetor did.Was back in the 90's,lasted a few years.Nothing wrong with Zetors, big seller in Europe,GB.Thet did have a cheaper made Indian brand they used to market also.

I don't know about Zetor but Yanmar built compact tractors for Deere to Deere specs and they were not the same tractor. I was told the ones built to Deere specs had heavier components and parts were not interchangable.

That's not really true I had a 1300D 'Grey Market' Yanmar used the injection pump and some other parts off a JD 650 to repair the Yanmar. The parts bolted right up.I have a Yanmar 330
now its the same tractor as the JD 950 according to the mechanic I had working on the radiator of my 330 at the same time he he was working on a JD 950.

Its that green paint that makes them special it 'transforms' them off brands(LOL)Kinda like I say, I buy junkers but that ride on my trailer makes them prime classics by the time
I get home.

Just because a company builds an item to another company doesn't mean it's the same. Many companies do this. And there is a huge difference between "buying" and having "built". Most to the companies who sell to other manufacturers will sell a current item they market under the companies own name, painted and branded to the other company's name/colors but they will also set and run a separate line and build a similar product to the other company's specifications.

So in this case can JD buy an existing model having it painted, badged and numbered like they want it? Sure! Can they Spec one out and have the other company build it for them? Sure!

And yes Zetor did make some tractors for JD, just don't know is they still do. That doesn't mean that they are exactly the same as a comparable Zetor model. They maybe are and maybe not.

As far as sales? If I were selling Zetors I would mention to customers that Zetor is building tractors for JD "like/similar" this one. I wouldn't say "just like" this one unless I knew they were the same thing.

Back in the 90's JD dealers in N America could sell JD tractor models 2000,2100 & 2200 built by Zetor that were painted JD colors. I'm unaware if Zetor builds any tractors for JD today.

some guys will tell you anythung to sell a tractor . i looked hard at a zetter back in the 90s it came down to the dealer has robed so many parts off that new zetter i couldnt start and drive it thats why i didnt get one bought a new ford the next week . i did get to use a zetter a few years later sure didnt like it . nowi have 3 5000 jd and ther great tractors pritty sure there no kin to zetter .

He was stretching the truth. The premium 5000 series are built in Augusta Georgia. The next step down in the 5000 series are built in Mexico. The economy 5000 series are built in India they have metal flat fenders.

John Deere sold a few models of Zetors painted green years ago but to my knowledge they where only sold in Eastern Europe and some other third world countries. I have never seen one in person.

The last dealer I worked for sold Zetor. They were a crude tractor. Clumsy controls and odd ways of doing things. Motors where pretty rugged clutches where a weak spot on some models. Parts where hit or miss. You can usually find them easily online but the American Zetor distributor , America Jamwa, was a joke. They had one fellow that knew them well, Peter , and everyone else know little to nothing about them. I think that Zetor has a different system in place now but they have almost a zero market share. People looking for cheap tractors are going to Mahindra and others from Asia.

That may well be what he was told as part of his sales training, so he may have every reason to believe it's true even if it isn't or part of it isn't. Many companies don't tell their salesmen the whole story if it might reduce sales. Remember back when cigarettes were good for you?

Yes Bruce, the story is true to some extent. I have a Zetor 7245 (1986 production), and I can order parts from JD for it. For example the Zetor 72xx, 77xx series were marketed in some countries as John Deere machines, but I forget the JD numbers. There are few parts thta I must order from Zetor , but 90% are available from John Deere. If you go to this link:

https://jdparts.deere.com/servlet/com.deere.u90.jdparts.view.servlets.searchcontroller.EquipmentSearchControllerPartType

you can find all the Zetor tractors that have been made by Zetor, and sold in various countries around the world under the John Deere name (different Model Numbers).

Engines would be the same, I was told driveline parts were different. Maybe I'm wrong it has happened a few (too many, lol) times.

i worked for a zetor dealer in the late 90s he had some pictures of green and yellow deere badged zerors. they werent suppose to be sold in the states. one way to tell a zetor is that the under 90 hp models have rear drop axles
