Help Required with Case 430 Serial Number

I have an early 1960s Case 430 gas with the model/serial number tag missing. The engine number is 41SO9191 based on the tag on the right hand side of the engine block behind the throttle rod. The "S" and the "O" definitely appear to be letters. Does anyone have any info that would tie this engine to a tractor serial number and model number? If so, would you please help? Thanks

Can't remember if it is on the bell housing on that series tractor or not. Look on the bell flange on the left side . Also posting down on the Case Forum will get a lot
more help.

I think that most serial numbers are located on the dash but the engine serial number is a metal tag that read the numbers. This tractor you have is a David Brown tractor / case. If it was an I.H. there would be cast letters and numbers on each part date year and month. Witch I think is not there on it because it is earlier tractor before International Harvester merge in to Case. A lost serial number means that you will never find that data to chase that serial number down. Good luck on your request.

Don't mean to split hairs but I believe Case bought IH when they were on their way out.Case fellows as well as IH fellows did not care for this deal.

If I remember right the David Brown tractors stop at 1959. Then J.I Case tractors started up in the 1960's then after those years Came Case I.H tractors. I am sorry I forgot this yesterday when I stated the 440&430 where not David Brown tractors. The 430 & 440 where made in all different ways. there where 430 diesel Ag tractor, 430 CK construction and 430 with triple speed on to a automatic power shuttle. Some even had a Hydrostatic steering and several front ends. Like adjustable, single, and solid front axles. The solid front axles are hard to find parts for. One note make Shure you come to a complete stop before going in to reverse. If you do not you will break the reverse fork. that is if your tractor is like mine has a manual transmission in it. That fork is 280.00 I should know I have had to replace mine once.

Brent, You have a lot to learn about CASE history. CASE/Tennico purchased David Brown Ltd. 1n 1972., and then they bought IH in 1984. Your referral to a Case tractor with a G148 in it being a DB is totally wrong. They were built in the Rock Island Il. plant, not in England.

Thanks Loren, Brent, roaddevil49 and casenut1. Not used to this forum so hope I'm responding properly. This is definitely a Case tractor, not built in the UK and not a David Brown or Case/IH. My '61 IH B275 was built at Bradford in the UK. This one must be an early model of the 430 gas based on reference to the operator's manual and the IT service manual; the manual steering appears to be an earlier set up and the little slide lever under the front of the hydraulic pump housing for engaging / disengaging the pump was apparently only fitted to early models. This one has manual transmission (not Case-O-Matic, thankfully) and I believe a 3 range gearing setup and a lever on the left side that supposedly lets you operate a live PTO. No chance to try it all out yet because we have lots of pieces for fixing and a fair bit of machining going on but it should all come together eventually. Much bigger project than I originally thought!
Anyone have any idea if model and serial numbers were marked anywhere else other than on dash - which seems a pretty 'odd' place to put this info. It would be nice to pin it down but not essential in the overall scheme of things. Objective is to restore to a useful tractor (has FEL) but not an exact replica of the original.

Crinton, Look on the left side of the bell housing flange. Not sure if this model has it there or not. Where are you located at?

Thanks, casenut1. No nothing there. Nearest thing is a label on mid torque tube left side with gearing info that I can't totally read but no serial number info. Looks like I might be out of luck on this one but then serial number is probably the least of my problems! Bit dumb just putting the serial number on a piece of tin under the dash. I'm located in West Kootenay, BC, just north of border, and you?

Ohio, yes a bit far! Now, this is off (serial number) topic but I'm trying to remove the upper part of the (manual) steering box and need to get the U-Joint yoke off the end of the shaft that comes out of the housing. I have the roll pin out and I've undone the steering shaft support bracket, and have quite heavily bumped the front end of the yoke several times but no movement on the shaft at all. I'm planning on cooking it up to expand it and then bump it some more once i pick up some more acetylene tomorrow. The manual says to just bump it off - any thoughts on that? Have you removed this type of manual steering gear before?
