O/T Plastic Fuel Tank Shield

Going to need to drop my tank as it has developed a leak somewhere. It is dripping gas from a few spots from the shield. I wish there was a way to remove the shield without dropping the tank but it dosen't appear you can. Has anyone installed a tank and left the plastic shield off. It seems it's just something to hold dirt and water and rust the tank.
Thank you,
Bill

I think the plastic shield was added by the factory for liability reasons to help prevent a tank puncture from debris, or give a little protection in a crash, for example the infamous "60 Minutes" exploding Chevy pickups with the tanks outside the frame rail had a plastic shield added midway through their production run.

It's a tradeoff, a little more puncture resistance vs. it's gonna rust and leak sooner or later.

NO reason you can't toss it if you are willing to accept any risks or liabilities from eliminating a factory safety feature.

I took my shield off when I replaced the tank and left it off. Been over ten years and no damage on tank at all.
