quiet tractors?

I get on here every once in awhile and read some discussions but I don't know much about tractors and have little to share. What a great forum!

So here's a question. A couple years ago I bought a JD2030 with a loader. I like the tractor just fine but it's loud.

I never use the loader so I think I might sell it and try to find a similar tractor power-wise but quieter. Is there such a beast?

I don't think there's anything wrong with my tractor, but at some point, tractors have become quieter.

Does it have a muffler or straight pipe. We had a guy who loved the straight pipes put muffler back on, much better now.

You never use the loader? That's hard to imagine! Mine is easy to take off but I never do, always need it for something. Maybe you could get a better muffler for yours, someone might of put on an aftermarket.

Look up Nebraska Tractor test #1085 for the 2030 diesel and #1084 for the 2030 gasoline (both tested in 1971). At maximum power the diesel tested 97.0 dB/(A) at the operator's ear and the gasoline tested 94.5 dB/(A). Adding 3dB/(A) feels about twice as loud to most people. An upright muffler without an extension and a canopy can both direct more noise at the operator.

is the muffler any good or is it rusted or burned out.ive seen lots of them on all brands of tractors that looked good but insides were gone.

I have 2 MF tractors with the same gasoline engine. One has the original reverse flow muffler and the other has
a straight muffler (probably a glass pack replacement) and the difference is amazing. An old gas MF with a good reverse flow muffler, running under the foot rest is a pretty quiet animal.

I bought a new muffler but haven't put it on yet.

In addition to the other's comments about the quality of the muffler you have, you might consider re-routing the muffler to under the tractor. That will cut a lot of noise. I see that the 2030 is set up for the vertical exhaust, but I did find a photo of a 2030 on the net with horizontal muffler.

I don't know why the photo didn't load

You should be wearing ear plugs and ear muffs every minute that tracor is running. Download the "decibel" app for your phone.

The real answer to a comfortable quiet ride would be any of the modern tractors with a cab. They have heat when cold, air conditioning when it is hot, protects you from bugs and bee stings, air ride seat and yes very quiet. This one even has "Blue Tooth" so you can visit on the phone when you are not listening to the music. Also has a garage door opener in the sun visor. You have it all but don't be crabbing about the budget when you go to pick it up at the dealership.

No offense to Tom, but the real secret to a quiet tractor is not to drive one of those green and yellow ones. :)

Try red. Nice rumble to em.

I also have a 2030, upright muffler and I don't think it's loud.
But then I lost quite a bit of hearing with all those years and hours on a 60 and 730.

I think I know what you are talking about. If it's diesel they make more noise than gas. Also those models have a distinct racket from the hyd. pump and the live pto in the clutch area rattling. At least that's what I pin it down to ? Now if the pump coupler is worn and clutch hub ? and other stuff the noise gets worse.

You are right, tractors have gotten quieter, and the muffler is just a small part of it. Just one example is the insulated side covers over the engine on most tractors that have been built in the last twenty years. As Tom OConnor pointed out a modern cab is a very big factor. As an example, I drive a dump truck occasionally for some friends. They recently got a new 2016 wheel loader. While a still modern, fifteen year old loader will really howl while pushing into the pile, you can't hear this new one running if you have the radio on.

First thing you'll do after running it a few times is getting rid of that canopy. Nothing more than a noise amplifier.

Is it possibly the noise is partly from the hydraulic system? I'm not sure if that tractor used the same type of pump in front of the engine as JD did on a 3010 - 4020 and on up. Those systems had good capacity, pressure and longevity but they do create there fair share of noise. The de-stroke system can come out of adjustment and cause the noise to increase. If you steer the wheel or activate the raise cycle of the 3 point does the noise from the tractor decrease? You most likely will need someone familiar with these tractors to tell you if there is a problem with the hydraulic system.

I will look into the muffler. I'll bet it's shot.
And yes, I always wear cover the ear style protection. I love music too much to risk damaging the ears.

About the quietest (old) diesels were the International D 239s in the 574 etc. They had crankshaft balancers or something I have 14 or 15 Diesel on the farm of 4 or 5 brands and by far the IH 684 and 574 and 664 are the smoothest , quietest, least offensive of them all. The 4-cylinder Mahindras are smooth and quiet but newer. I read where Navistar (International) and Mahindra share an engine plant somewhere. Some diesels have an offensive rattle noisy nature. 4-cly deeres and 3-cyl anything, for example.

Most utility tractors of that era had similar noise levels in the mid 90's dB/(A), IH, MF, AC etc. Compared to a row crop tractor the operator on a utility tractor sits closer to the engine, hood, exhaust, fan and hydraulics, less low frequency noise but more high frequency noise compared to a larger row crop tractor. In those days sheet metal panels and canopies didn't get any sound deadening.
