During the Holidays, gasoline prices always increase because of demand.

So, why do Turkey and Ham prices drop? while the demand increases during the Holiday season?

My take? Producers grow for the season and just like you at harvest time, need a buyer. Competition can be keen with a lot of producers and suppliers competing. Besides most folks have a bird, thy, or leg for the holiday festivities and as such they are a draw for the customer to load up on a basket full of groceries for their holiday AT YOUR STORE!

Commonly known as a "loss leader."

You sell one item at a "loss" to entice customers to buy other items at regular price.

My local grocery store was selling turkeys at 48 cents per pound, but you had to spend $25 on regular priced merchandise to qualify for the discount. So, you couldn't just walk in buy a cheap turkey and leave.

Like others have said they sell them cheap to get shoppers in the store, wife picked up a couple extras from Wigmans before Thanksgiving and also we got 2 bushels of the
Sweet potatoes at 29 cents a pound, they went back up to 99 cents a pound after Thanksgiving, she also saves big $$$ with coupons and something called 'extra bucks' end up getting some stuff for free at CVS.
