Hard starting forklift

Dads Komatsu FG25 starts hard when the motor is cold but starts first crank when the motor is warm. What does it need? Tune up kit? Carb kit? It is a Nissan H20 lp gas motor. Thanks

That is the problem the previous reply. It is a nature of the beast in cold weather for propane to not vaporize well. So hard starting till it warms up some.

I'm only familiar with my 49 Case DC, converted to LP in about 1956. Is set up to have coolant from the radiator pass through the converter to warm the lp to vaporize better. I have a tank heater on my unit. If it needs to start in cold weather I need to plug it in an hour or so before I need it. works for me gobble

My Cat/Mitsubishi got to bothering last spring. I can't remember exactly, but I think both the coil and resistor tested outside of the service book parameters. Dealer quoted something like $80 and a few days to get the coil/resistor assembly. So I got a generic "no resistor required" coil. I used it some, but it would barely start. I tried a local mom and pop repair place, and they were able to get the proper coil/resistor assembly cheaper than the generic coil! It has worked fine since.

Coils/resistors/ignition systems are discussed on here frequently. I have not experienced an engine where the resistor bypass while cranking system made a lot of difference, until now. I'm thinking something about the propane makes it a lot more critical?

Marcus,If there is something wrong with the fuel system,Just rebuild it.Most of the time if anything causes a problem it is the fuel regulator or fuel lock valve. You can get rebuild kits for them at a reasonable low cost. After a time they become gummed up with a thick tar like substance, that also hardens and cracks rubber control valves and diaphragms. The engine will run many many X longer and trouble free on L/P PROPANE as it will on gasoline.
1 install a new set of spark plugs
2 install new air filter
3 install block heater,it may have one check for plug and cord.
4 try pushing button in a couple seconds on fuel lock before cranking.
5 check vacuum hose from carb to fuel lock for leaks, cracks or loose ends at fittings
6 try a shot of starting fluid in the intake
7 Dirty/plugged filter inside fuel regulator

Ive got 2 forklifts in a temp. controlled warehouse. The warehouse is maintained at 15 degrees. Both of my lifts will start within 2 seconds of turning the key, after sitting all night.

Check the compression before you do any parts replacing. Checking compression doesn't cost anything. I have seen engines not start due to low compression but when you get them warmed up they start better once the parts swell a little.

Four things are needed for an engine to run. 1. Fuel 2. Air 3. Compression 4. Ignition Source

Did you get my email regarding a carb? I work in a plant that has over 100 various forklifts and sweepers almost all LP. Except for the rare one or two days in the winter when it may be -10 degrees and a unit was left outside, all of them will start. almost all of them have Impco setups and for what ever reason we have some that crank longer than others when cold, usually defined by brand. As mentioned the LP systems build up greasy wax like goo inside which prompts a rebuild of the vaporizer. But, once done lasts for many hours. An engine with good vacuum and spark helps but I find the LP fuel setup to be very forgiving and for a unit started and used only occasionally, I think its better than gasoline.
