Sen Thurmond was also the oldest person to ever serve in the senate. Retired at age 100. I met him at a stump meeting in our community back in the 50's. Our oldest son met him in his senate office in the 90's.
A local boy worked for him in the senate and said Sen Thurmond rode to work in a Plymouth Valiant.
