Combining corn in the mud

Finally got my 1160 combine all set up and in the field today. Found a LOT of mud! Everyones fields are rutted badly, and Jeff's are worse. He needed some corn for feed or we would have waited.

If your having trouble getting thru the mud,let some air out of your drive tires.we used to have to do that in the gumbo mud down here in La.It got so bad one year we added 2 x6's to every other pad on our steel tracked combines sticking out about a foot for flotation and added traction

We had a 49 SP125 IH combine (woof) but it cut crop and was the biggest in the neighborhood. It had skinny duals on the drive wheels and a H style wide steering axle on the back. It would get stick very easily, and we were compelled to keep a tractor on sight 50% of the operation time. (never corn) Jim

Can you run duals or fat tires behind that head? Rice tires? I had duals on the Gleaner F with 4RW, then had 28Lx26 on the F2 behind a 430 head.

I'm looking for a set of 28L-26 tires for it. Duals don't work so good in mud. With singles you can most always back out of a tough spot, but not so much wirh duals. If I find a good set of wider tires I'll put them on.

It's a challenge some years.....this year we picked all our corn on the 21st and 22nd of October. Didn't get stuck, but did have to use positraction on the 886 IH in one low spot on one of the three fields he had corn in. Hope things firm up, or freeze without snow, soon.

Bet 1/3 of the corn fields between me and Mankato are still out there untouched. Been a heck of a year.

I had the combine spin twice so far this year but nothing too bad. We have had nice falls the past 5 plus years, so hadn't dealt with mud with the hydro combines that was interesting.

Unfortunately I had to choose, go after the 30 acres of very wet field of corn or the soybeans the last dry spell. I got the corn, but now I have beans left in this constant rain fall. Well the corn field has ponds in it again so I rhink I did right, but it's tough to look at the bean field with this constant grey and wet and it's getting mighty late........

Had to unhook full wagons twice, they sunk a bit and tractor spin. Both times quit in time and got a bigger tractor, not much issues.

Guess that $75 grand in tile the past few years is paying off. Still a wet mess this year tho.

Paul

Your machine is doing a very good job as that wagon sample looks very clean. I installed a new concave and rasp bars in my 95 and am having a hard time not breaking up the cobs. On a Deere 95 with factory sprockets you can only slow cylinder speed to 425 and with fairly dry corn it needs to be slower. I have not been back in the fields since the rain but might give it a try today. Tom

Wide singles did work better than the duals...duals had to be only a few inches apart to fit behind the head, and they filled with mud easily. No recourse at the time, had the duals, only expense was some time and a bit of steel to adapt them. Combine tires were 26 inch, so I used 3/4 solid square rod as a spacer between the 28 and the band I installed. Had larger spacer bands available, so cut them down to 26 inch.

On the 28L, a shop near Belgrade welded in a 10 inch band to widen the rims, and added the fat tires. They extended a few inches beyond the 430 head, but was ok.

Have you tried filler bars on the cyl? When cobs are wet, rubbery, they help to roll the cobs thru, shelling them off better. Keeps them out of the cyl center, not breaking them up as much. I remember one Fall, late Nov, corn would not dry in the field under 32%- even with filler bars it was hard to shell them off completely. My neighbor said my F2 was doing better than his 6600.

Lot of tracks being installed on combines around here in western Minn. Some with tracks on both ends.

Paul, I'm one of them 1/3 fields you are driving by. I too have beans in the field. About 35 acres. Sounds like we will get them later this week. No rain, sunshine and temps in the 60s. I will change back to corn tomorrow and finish that. about 30 acres left. Unbelievable high yields in both corn and beans.

I did not put cylinder bars in. I have them but the corn is coming in at around 18% or less. Did 2000bu last week that were 14.5%. I think the new concave and bars are to aggressive and that a slower cylinder speed is what I need. They are breaking apart crossways and not longways.Tom

Check with some of the Deere dealers over in the Red river valley. There have been a number of 28L-26 that were taken off the back of the newer combines. You might find a set reasonable.
