8 volt vs 6 volt

yes , ask your self, how does a 6 volt generator charge an 8 volt battery ? 8 volt batteries are intended for golf carts.

Hello mike/holly jones,

Just replace whats broken if all else is well. Get the biggest battery you can fit-afford, and probably the cheapest way all the way around. Get all your reconnections up to speed, and never look back!,

I'd be concerned making a one third increase in voltage to an electronic ignition

Why are you thinking 8 volt? As indicated it is a Band-Aid fix and a big question mark to keep it charged.

Also it will blow the crap out of your lite bulbs. One of my dads friends did that with his model "A" and blew bulbs by the dozen. Fix all of the conection and heavyer wire problems first. Welder cable makes a BIG difference! Also install a new starter solinoid. They do slowly get worn out and do not supply a full kick in the pants.

Mike done that years ago with WD45 and Mt John Deere. never had a problem with anything doing it. Genneys kept them charged enough to work well

The company I work for put 8 volt batteries in a bunch of tractors. All charging system failed due tot he fact the regulator sensed the battery was full @ 8 volts and refused to charge the battery. I removed all the 8 volt batteries, replaced with 6 volt. Bingo, all started charging again.

Also the 8 volt do not seem to last any where as long as the 6 volt. Personally, FWIW I would stay with the 6, fix what ever is wrong and move on.

Yep, not a problem. When I was a kid in the 60s almost every tractor on Dad's silo filling run had 8 volt batteries. If I could find them I'd use them. Made the lites brighter for fall plowing back then.

Why would it blow the light bulbs when it says right on them for 8 volt? Does not compute.

Ran the 8 volts for years with no problems keeping them charged. Only thing to think about is that electronic ignition.

As a kid in the early '60s, I had a '53 chevy that we put an eight volt battery on. We cranked up the regulator and had no problem charging the battery, yeah those headlights were like airplane landing lights. Lights would last a few years, but not as long as on 6 volts.
