Newer trucks?

One of my nephews truck clutch went out in Lansing. He called his dad who went and picked him up. It's a new dodge. I learned to drive on 60-70's vehicles. Is it now impossible to shift newer vehicles without the clutch.

That would be pretty hard on the syncros you would think, trying to shift with power still being transmitted through the trans. That's why big trucks don't have synchronizers. I wouldn't want to mess up a newer manual, the days of a manual being cheaper to replace than an automatic are long gone. The new manual transmissions are very pricey. Well, at least he's near Clutch Dynamics if he wants to have a real clutch built.

When most clutches go out the disc falls apart and the truck will not move, yes you can shift without a pedal, but you do need a clutch disc and pressure plate.

I had Clutch Dynamics in Lansing build me a nice HP clutch/pressure plate and turn flywheel for my '66 GTO way back in the '90,s . Great people and great prices and they KNOW what they are doing.

You're not kidding Randy. I don't buy clutch kits anymore, it's cheaper to have them build clutches, and it's done right, no worry about inferior China parts assembled wrong. They have done every clutch I've done for the last 10 years, tractor, pickup, heavy truck, even a 16" custom ceramic for my grader I used to have, and a ceramic button HD clutch for my pickup.

That name rings a bell. I remember in mid 90's I rebuilt a 1550 and they rebuilt the clutch and pressure plate for me.

It's a "new Dodge" and the clutch already went out? Sounds like an "old Dodge" to me, given that Chrysler hasn't sold trucks under the Dodge brand since '09.

The newest vehicle I've driven with a manual, an '09 Saturn Sky, could be easily shifted without using the clutch.

Just one forced shift and the synchronizer may be history :(

You can't 'force' it- You gotta 'FEEL' it in, just like a big truck! Tricky, but it can be done.

The clutch in question is a 'dual-mass' abortion used by Chrysler with the Daimler-mandated G56 6-speed, which does not hold a candle to the pre G56 6-speed (NV5600) which had a proven single-disc clutch. Call South Bend and they will fix you up. The G56 shifts easier and has a more logical shift pattern but has an aluminum case and one less bearing. Dual disc clutches have been tried before, with the same result. I think that the 'enganeers' size them to please the 'bean-counters' and they don't have the capacity for the intended application! Follow the money! 8)

Didn't Dodge have a "Fluid Drive" back in the late '40's and early '50's? It was a quasi auto tranny as I recall. Still had to shift manually, but no clutch was required.
