Old black boards as used in schools

Slate is the traditional material--back before paper was cheap and easily purchased in quantity even the students had small hand-held slates that were written on and wiped clean after each lesson.

"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class."
"I will not talk during class." . . . . . .

And so on until 100.

I have one of those slate boards out in the shed now. Same material as the slate for a roof only cut thicker and in larger pieces. Now when they went to the green boards that were supposed to be easier on the eyes but were actually harder to see anything on I have no idea what they were made of.

Last year in high school my dad took sick and I was doing things my mom got me up early to get chores done so I wouldn't miss school. When I got to school i usually fell asleep in class . That was the year I was on the honor roll I got proof that the teacher liked me better with my mouth shut .

Actually the slate used for roof work is not as good as the pool table and chalk board stuff. Roof slate has a slight roughness to it and can be one and two ribbon. Looks like it has little stripes in in. Pool tables and boards are number one Fine grain and smooth as glass. That one section of chalk board where you were spelling out that little tome today would cost close to $600.oo each. That is why when they take down an old school one of the most valuable things are the chalk boards. They are very heavy and most likely are 1/2 inches think or more. Slates also come in a bunch of colors. I have seen red, black, blue, and green but there is also purple. I have done a couple of slate roofs with my old man and what a bear of a job it was! Glad I was still in my teens!
