In the news this week lost 2 farmers. first in paper was spraying and boom hit power line, farmer was electrocuted when he exited the tractor. This was near Bunker Hill, Indiana. Today's news on South Bend TV , The victim was working on a tire and the tube burst, killing him.
Lets be careful out there. joe
tire burst

first impulse is to get off tractor, but what do you do? stay on tractor in hope things do not get worse, hope someone comes alone and notices you, call on cell phone. i suspect there was significant arcing going on which would incline someone to exit tractor quickly. if you find yourself in this situation, jump off tractor with both feet on ground at same relationship and hop, hop, hop till you are a safe distance from the tractor. do not ever step off one foot at a time and attempt to walk/run away. step potential (distance between both feet on ground at same time) will provide a path for current flow, through one foot, up leg, across groin area, down the other leg and exit to ground/earth via the foot.

The person that is hired by my employer for safety meetings, etc, has always told us if we get into wires with our dump boxes on our trucks, to stay in the cab until help gets there. He said once the tires burn off and the rims touch the ground, it will quit burning. Or so he says so... I'd be a little concerned about all of the hyd lines, wires, air lines, etc around/near the tires catching on fire as well, before the rims touch the ground.

Personally, I would not attend any of his seminars. Fact, tires are burning because the electricial resistance is failing due to the magnitude of volts is exceeding their capabilities. Tire fires will soon into a raging inferno which will consume vehicle and occupants. When rims touch ground the fire will go out: if you and vehicle still exists, however, when rims touch ground then an electricial path to ground is established, current will flow in such quantities that automatic sensing devices (fuses, relays) will operate to de-energize the circuit. In all likelihood the current values will be of high values and long duration before de-energization. Best to exit cab if tires start to smoke. There again; however, I have never been in this stituation but remember, both feet together and hop away.

Hi I attended a safety seminar by local power utility and the Instructor said as you jump off tractor or vehicle and as you said landinding with both feet together making sure all body parts are not touching tractor then shuffle walk away making sure neither feet leave the ground.

I was in a switchyard where a dump truck was dumping gravel the gravel dust arced, all four tires blew out right away . The truck was ruined. The guy stayed in the truck until the overhead bus was de-energized. 250KV yard. Cost Public Service a lot of money. The re-action will depend on the voltage involved.[ in this case because it was dust that arced the truck was never energized .The risk to the driver minimal.]
