Air Bag Recall

We just got a recall notice on out '11 Honda CRV.

They say the air bags are defective, could go off with too much force and send broken pieces of metal and plastic flying ahead of the bag.

It must be a serious problem, saying there have been injuries, even deaths! They are saying to quit driving it until the part comes available sometime this summer. They are offering to provide a loaner car in the meantime. Thinking of taking them up on the offer unless there is some hidden charge. Other downside, our car would sit outside while waiting.

Anyone else gotten one of these offers? Did you take it?

Steve@Advance- It's been in the news for some time now. Millions of cars are being recalled for the defective air bags sending shrapnel and killing/maiming people upon deployment of the air-bags.

The probability of this happening is supposed to be greater in areas of high humidity. My 04 Dodge Ram I is on the recall list for the last year...I got another notice last week. I guess they have the replacements now. I never got an offer of a loaner...probably do to where you live and availability of a replacement for your vehicle.

Probably made by Takata,, lots of cars have them, seems like the recalls started 4 or 5 years ago.

The southern states have a priority on parts since they determined the inflators are more vulnerable in higher humidity and higher heat areas.

If your only concern is where the car will be stored while waiting for parts, there might be a small chance that the dealer will let you keep the car at home and safely in your garage. I wouldn't want a bunch of vehicles sitting around waiting for parts for weeks or months at a time, they could run out of room for that matter. The only problem with that is they can't "hold" the vehicle or control whether you are still driving it or not.

I'll paste a paragraph from the JYO Campaign letter

REMEDY:
THE REMEDY PARTS NEEDED TO CONDUCT DRIVER'S AIRBAG INFLATOR RECALLS WILL BECOME AVAILABLE IN SUMMER OF 2016. HONDA WILL NOTIFY OWNERS WITH AN INITIAL LETTER AND A SECOND LETTER WILL BE MAILED WHEN PARTS ARE AVAILABLE. PLEASE DISCUSS YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS AND CONCERNS WITH YOUR DEALER, INCLUDING THE PROVISION OF, OR REIMBURSEMENT FOR, TEMPORARY ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION AS NECESSARY. OWNERS MAY CONTACT HONDA'S AUTOMOBILE CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-888-234-2138. HONDA'S CAMPAIGN NUMBER FOR THIS RECALL IS JY0.

The OP's CR-V was only added to the recall last month, so it's not like its an old recall to him.

I got the notice on my 2004 Toyota Tundra. I brought it in and waited about 1 hour while they replaced it, it was the passenger side air bag. No cost to me.

In 1990 when I was with Ford, they had a recall on some recent Crown Vic's for the airbag. The cars only had one in the steering wheel back then, and airbags were in their infancy so it didn't seem to surprise anyone.

We had to check the VIN of every Crown Vic that came into the service department, and if the VIN matched a list we had gotten from Ford, we had to remove the airbag, disable the vehicle, and give the customer a loaner car while we ordered and installed a new air bag.

Family has a whole fleet of Honda's. No air bag recalls here Yet except maybe Dad's 2004 pilot ? it had something on it awhile back. Maybe Mom will be getting one as her crv is close to yours.

Just got a notice in today's mail about a problem with my Durango. I traded it a year ago......
