JD 420 Tires (14.9 x 28)

I have an old John Deere 420 (1956) that needs some rear tires. The tires on it are 14.9 x 28. I read somewhere that on a 2WD that a 13.6 or 16.9 x 28 would replace a 14.9 x 28. Can any one tell me if that's correct? I thought I'd look around for some used tires and was wonder if there was a range I could watch for. Thanks

You already have OVERSIZE tires on it. Factory was 12 or in new size 13.6 x 28". That 16.9 would make the tractor fly but you would have NO pulling power to do anything but try to moove the tractor.

My 420U has 14.9 on it. 13.6 will clear the fenders better and be a lot better on my knuckles when I put my hand on the fender. 16.9 I would have to move the wheels out in order to be able to put them on.

Using old size marking (like 13x28), you can go an inch wider or narrower than the rim width. Measure at the bead. 12 inch rim is 13.6 tire, new size marking, would max at 14.9.

Thanks everyone for all the very helpful information. The tires on it now have almost no tread, which has been OK as all I use it for is a little bush hogging. Now I'd like to start putting out a garden, but with no tread or fluid, it won't pull my 2 bottom plow. I'm hoping better tread alone will be enough to scratch out a garden plot. It sounds like 13.6 would be a better tire for pulling, is that right? Thanks all.

Depends on the width of the plough bottom. Your is likely the row crop utility chassis which is rather short on the backside and ride nose high.
5:00-15 on the front helps . 14.9x28 will make it about level.
14.9x28 is somewhat arbrtrary. The actual height, sidewall width and tread width will vary. Between manufactures and model lines with in the same manufacture.
14.9 is about max width for a 12" wide rim to use.
How a plough is adjusted and setup will make or break on how hard or easy it is to pull.

You can out a set of double ring chains on it for a lot less than a set of tires. Traction out the wazoo.

I have 16.9 x 28 on a jd 1520 45hp. can't get enough grip just spins on top of dirt. Planning on going to 13.6 s

The JD 420 came from the Factory with 9X24" rear tires and 5.00" Front Tires..

Going to look some kind of Strange with 16,9x28" on the rear...!!!

The parts book. 420 tires sizes are numerous due to all the different chassis types and options within each chassis.
The "W" could be optioned with 11.2X34 rear tires.
