drum mower spread pattern

We've had a Zetor drum mower for a few years. I like it most because it can be used on any grass, no plugging. It is a little narrow (53in). I've been reading that a wider swath dries better and this mower puts the hay in a windrow. I was wondering if I took the tarp off the back could I then expect it to fling it out some?

We have a Reese 8 ft. Drum mower. It windrows also. But has a kicker that spreads it out. Ours just has a top no curtain.

The two drums turn in opposite directions which naturally pulls the grass to the center before exiting the rear of the mower, removing the tarp will not spread the hay out but anything you hit such as a rock or a root will fly out the back. A straight bar ''fluffer'' tedder such as a pequea 710 or 910 does the best job of working windrows and does not scatter dirt and trash everywhere like a turbo tedder, H&S also makes a fluffer tedder with a windrow turning wheel.

How well it dries in a swath vs. spread out depends on your soil and climate. This year I mowed most of mine spread out wide from the discbine. Most years we have to put it into swaths and let the ground dry for 4-8 hours before tedding it out.
