A sight you don't see on the roads anymore

After a couple days of playing in the field out at Farmamerica I drove my equipment back home the other day. Part of my route was on a frontage road that ran right next to the 4 lane. It was fun to see how many heads turned to watch as cars went by. You don't see this kind of equipment moving on the roads anymore.
What was especially cool was I met a real farmer in a large tractor with duals pulling a large gravity box. He pulled off to the side so I could get by!

Neat. I bet you did enjoy that. My dad once backed the 4020, picker and wagon up to another wagon. He was proud of that. I have enough of a time backing things up lol.

We had a Polled Shorthorn cow that was the "herd boss". She loved it when we finished picking and opened the gate to let the cows out to glean the field. She watched that 1-row picker all day long and was standing by the gate when we picked that last row. She wasn't interested in any other work we did in the fields, just when we were picking corn. Had to chuckle at her behavior.

Brings back memories of my favorite time and activity of the year when I was a kid. I envy you to be reliving the good old days. BTW, how much shelled corn does that picker leave in its wake?

well, depends where you live. :)

We've been known to travel along the roads between a few fields around here with a single row
picker an a gravity wagon too.

Don't have a great picture though - this is the best I could do.

Lots of fun.

Although we get fewer looks of admiration than middle fingers and shouts of "get off the road".

Very nice! Those flare box wagons held about what - 60 bushels of grain or 30 bushels of ear corn? With a speed jack and cable wagon hoist that was a slow process.

I have done a lot of ear picking with a two row picker. Both a mounted 234 IH on a 856 and a two row pull type behind a MTA.

I now combine with a 6 row head on a 2366 with heat and air.

I'll take the cab and air. I enjoy heat and AC more than I ever did fighting the cold and dusty on the ear pickers.

If I only did it for a couple of days maybe the cold and dust would be ok. But we did it for 30 days or more every fall back before the 80's.
