Alternator problem

Purchased a John Deere B off of an individual the other day. Having problems with the alternator. Some times it charges and some times it doesn't. Seem to kick in when tractor is reved up to max. I believe the John deere B series ran at 1250 rpm but not sure. Could it just not be spinning the alternator quick enough to get it started. Would replacing the pully on the alternator fix the problem. Thanks.

That's a typical problem, especially if it has a one wire alt. A smaller pulley will help, but only if it has a large pulley on it now.

The one wire alternators have a trigger point that they start charging. When turning fast enough they make more amps than the average generator.

Could well be.
When I was switching an AC over to 12V, I tried a generator off a JD. I could hardly get it to do much. Turned out that JD uses a higher speed gen., while AC uses a slower speed one. I never would have guessed that.

Assuming its a One Wire alternator they take a certain RPM before they excite and a slow turning JD may have to run pretty fast before it engages. Sure if possible a smaller alternator will make it run faster provided you have a good and tight belt. Keep a good tight belt on her and as long as she kicks in once revved up I wouldn't worry about it.

Not if you have the right alternator, mine starts charging before the engine starts.

I had a 3 wire on my B, never any issue, I would put the smallest pulley you can get on it, maybe convert it to 3 wire.

It is working right you need enough rpm to get it to start charging. As said below if you can put a smaller diameter pulley on it you won't need full throttle in order to get it to charge.

Both my alternators need reved up before they wake up. The older alternators didn't need a wake up
call.

I'd sure like to see that in action.

I have one like that on my skidder . At idle it puts out 10.6 volts, and at high rpm it's 14.5, and thats okay . I also have a battery disconnect switch no power feeds back and kills my batteries .

Had the same problem on my Farmall. There's a guy named Charlie U, sells kits and diodes that plug in, made my Delco 10SI alternato charge right up and move the needle the minute I start. It charges right up, no need to rev things. Then it tapers off, works perfectly. Very economical. [ I have no personal interest in this. ]

Thanks FBH44. I am still having the same problem. Cant get the alternator to kick in. Shop says it is fine. Do you by chance have a number for Charlie's repair.

Take the alternator to a good rebuilder and tell them you want a D10AC regulator installed, it is a special regulator not to be confused with the common 1 wire regulator. It changes the whole internal excitation process. It does away with the diode trio and internal wiring is added to excite the alternator from the AC at the rectifier bridge. My 830 Case charges immediately when started at better than 30 A at idle and the Case diesel is a low RPM engine. The regulator is easily obtainable , just Google it and many hits will come up.
