Two kinds of hunters

If we leave out the guy that uses your land uninvited that leaves two kinds of hunters.

First we have the guy that spends mega bucks leasing land; building food plots; buying the best 4 wheeler known to man; builds blinds that rivals backyard sheds; and gets up a 3 am just so he can show his macho side because he killed something.

Then there is the guy that kills a 350+ lb hog while sitting in a plastic lawn chair in his back yard.

Had Turkey hunters here that dressed in expensive camo, big 4 wheelers, 4x4 trucks, you name it they had it. All about image. Yep they got their turkey, so did the retired school teacher that showed up wearing blue jeans and a brown flannel shirt.

They are getting very bad in my part of Texas. Got up one morning saw about twenty. Walking down the street. I live on the edge of town.

There is a name for it and it escapes me now . But one kind is sustainable he harvest what he needs for food also includes any plant food and the other is a trophy hunter only interested in bragging he has little love for the land

That is one ugly rough looking hog, glad we don't have them yet but they are one the opposite side of a semi major river about 10 miles away so unfortunately its only a matter of time I guess.

Same could be said about fishing. Some spend thousands on bass boat, fish finders, GPS lap tops and a 225 hp motor. Then there are those with a small row boat, old 10 hp, cane poles. Guess who catches more fish?

I sorta fall in between those two scenarios. I like to brag about my hunting, but I've never wasted a forkful of any game I ever killed. I have killed deer in jeans and sitting in a lawn chair, and I've traveled to other parts of the state to hunt deer. I don't own a 4-wheeler but I do have one trail camera that was a Christmas gift. Otherwise, I don't think I would talk myself into spending the money. I have a couple of cheap portable blinds and several tree stands around the farm, and they are the cheapest ones I can buy. Our hunting is pretty basic and redneck when you come right down to it.

That is one heck of a hog, ain't it? My wife and I took a couple of hogs in PA years ago. They were nice animals, but nothing like that booger!

Must be fairly young. The only thing I have to compare it to is my production hogs, though. My young boat is about that weight (300) and is about 14 months. The oldest sow here is about 600 pounds but she's about 6 years old. She's just my old favorite so I've kept her long after her prime.

(quoted from post at 03:48:38 09/20/15) Sounds like when we go snow goose hunting. White lawn chairs white baseball cap white disposable coveralls and maybe 20 decoys.

Some women in town saw all the decoys, called the cops and said somebody had killed a bunch a geese and left them lay.

Like the first time i went hunting with a buddy. Thanksgiving morning i get a call from my buddy , Hey what ya doing , want to go rabbit hunting . Ok why not i havve not been out in a long time . So i tell him yea but i'll have to run out to Wal Marts and get my licence and give me about forty five min. Well i crabbed my OLD shot gun that my grandfather gave me way back when i was 13 threw on my Carrharts and off to walley world , Bought a new box of shells and a elcheapo orange vest and my licences and off i go . When i get there everybody is sporting the latest and greatest clothing brand new semi auto shotguns . Then there is me with and OLD Ithca double barrel 12 Ga. . THE RULES say we can take FOUR rabbits . I open my new box of shells and take out twelve < Eugene say is that all you brought is one box . Well yea we are only going RABBIT hunting . Oh your going to need more then that as he finishes dumping the second FULL box into his coat pockets of 3 inch MAG's . Well we get into the field and turn TWo dogs loose and before vary long the dogs are on a couple rabbits and seven guys open up , Then i hear Dusty yelling that it is coming my way just as a snow squall opens up and i can't see ten feet inft. of me . Just as fast as it started it stopped and a second round of shooting opens up and Dusty again says he's coming your way and yep there he is way out there , Oh a job for the left trigger and Bam one rabbit down and ya hear did ya get him ?? yep i got him . This same deal played out three more times and it was yep i got him . Four rabbits and four rounds fired . When we quite so we could all go to our dinners the rest were down to maybe five to eight round left and only two others out of eight guys got any bunny's. They can have there fancy Benellie's and Remingtons i'll sick with Ithca , right trigger for fifty yds and down and left trigger for i can believe you made that shot .

Not sure what kind hunter this guy is being portrayed as but from the condition of the hog we call them "pen hunters"in Texas. They take fine deer the same way, sitting in a chair shooting animals with their mouth full of food placed earlier by landowner or hunter. Was his gun barrel through the fence or resting on top when he pulled the trigger? How old was that hog when it went on feed? How much feed did the hog eat on his way to weighning 350 pounds? Point being wild hogs aren't anywhere near in that good of condition.

I've hunted both ways. With decent gear and without. I've taken more game WITH the decent gear than without although I never did real bad with without. Last time I was out with people hunting geese the 4 of them were all shooting 3-3 1/2 mags. We had nice decoys and nice laydown blinds. I was shooting an 1100 Remington 2 3/4. I took more geese and fired less ammo than they did. But on the other hand because of my military service I've fired a heck of a lot more than they can even think about and was a small arms instructor. Those guys sure did a lot of sky blasting. My nephew, 2 of his buddies and a retired cop. The cop wasn't any better than the kids.

Thing of it is a guy with all the gear who knows how to shoot will take more game than someone without the gear simply because his camo and other stuff is better. Here we get a lot of folks from the twin cities who can afford leases and very nice equipment but other than checking the zero don't do any shooting. The guys that shoot do much better.

As far as boats and fishing, a nice boat with all the bells and whistles often produces fewer fish than a rowboat because the guy with the fancy boat is spending his time cruising around the lake showing it off. Fact is the guy who has a line in the water the longest is going to catch more fish. Now you take a guy with a nice boat, good gear and have him keep his line in the water just as long as the guy with rowboat you are not going to see much difference.

That must be a very strong lawn chair. Reminds me of the man who shot an elephant in his pajamas.

A subsistence hunter, I believe, is the word you're looking for. The guy that uses your land without asking is a tresspasser. The one that takes more than legal limit, game out of season, or uses illegal methods is a poacher. If they tear up your land or fences and stuff, he's a vandal. A hunter is one that respects seasons, bag limits, safety, and other folks' property. JMHO Mark

Around here we see "hunters" loading up on booze before they leave the pavement into the forest. Going for a jeep ride during opening week has risks, with a bunch of hangovers staggering around armed.

Well now if we are getting into how we could "once shoot",when they were kids Old's brother was picking off ground hogs out beyond 1,000 yards with a 22 rim fire,,,,or so he said.
I once killed a bunch of time while shooting the bull sitting in a lawn chair by a campfire.

Around here, we have another kind of hunter. You can find them the night before deer season at WalMart. They buy their license, about 4 or 5 boxes of slugs, all kinds of cammo. And they buy a new shotgun and expect it to be accurate.

Another kind we see every year is often at a gas station or McDonalds, or just driving around town, until about midnight. There is a pickup, jacked up 4x4. And in the back or on a small trailer is a big (the bigger the better) 4 wheeler ATV. Often they have a gun rack in the back window too. Some even have a spotlight on the floor or behind the seat, until they actually start the hunt.

Yep,I tell some of these Dan'l Boone types that they'd be money ahead if they'd buy a fat steer from me every year for the rest of their lives. They'd spend less money, waste no time at all and have better meat to boot.

Gotta remember here down south we have 9 plus warm months, plenty of crops they feed on,acorns, etc.plus they raid and tear up corn feeders for deer.i shot one close to that size years ago and it had a lot of fat between hide and meat!

Come to central Florida and I'll show you some close to that size that never been close to a pen. We are overrun with them. Young kid I work with hit one on the way to work a few weeks ago and did over $4000 damage to a full size pickup. Farmers here shoot them on site. You ought to see what they can do to a tomato field or a hay field

Thanks I've been thinking on that all day
but you put it right. Any hunter that will
use the animals that are harvested is OK
with me however if they just want to run
around and shoot at anything that moves we
got a problem. I had one that I wouldn't
let him and his pack of friends drive there
4 wheel drive trucks on my farm and he said
he was going to sue me for interfering with
his hunters rights

How about those that can drop their target in one shot, and then the one that unloads their gun while shooting at a target that is either moving or they just can't hit the broad side of a barn...

Started hunting with a .410 single shot and beagles. I have upgraded to a 20ga single shot just cause 410 shells can be hard to find. never needed anything else for rabbits.

Dad and Grandpa taught me how to figure where the rabbit was gonna run...and all you needed (or should need) was 1 shot for a rabbit.

And how to enjoy listening to the dogs run as much as anything

I wish I could have 1 more hunt with those two.
