After my post, Blue Water Massey MN posted an authoritative history on the campaign. That history cites the US 46th Army Engineers while I cited the 43rd. The 43rd was there. They arrived in Milne Bay on August 8, 1942. Companies C and F of the 43rd were in front when the attacks ensued. The 43rd is never mentioned, even in the most detailed histories, because they were never attached to a division. The 46th was attached to the 32nd Division. The details are there in the singular printed history of the 43rd and were offered to anyone who would listen at the 43rd's biennial reunion. Those reunions started in 1946 and lasted into the 1990's. The 43rd partied until they couldn't party anymore.
