Re the Northfield, MN raid by the James gang: The outlaws had 2 or more revolvers each, no rifles. Citizens resisted the raid but first had to get guns. A
hardware owner handed out guns, one man with a shotgun fired at a robber but unfortunately had only birdshot which did not badly wound the robber. One man got
an old percussion 50 caliber carbine but only 4 paper cartridges and caps for it. His first shot missed a robber and his horse. After he reloaded he braced
the gun of an upstairs window sill and carefully shot another robber off his horse, killing him. A hardware owner took his personal 45-70 Remington rolling
block single shot rifle and killed a horse to deprive the outlaws behind it of cover. His rifle jammed(cartridge did not eject and he had to run back in his
store to get a ramrod). After clearing the jam he shot one robber in the hip. Next he shot, offhand at 80 yards, another robber and killed him. The man in the
window took his last shot hitting a robber in the elbow. The gang then rode out of town. Later the James boys split from the rest and escaped. The 4 other gang
members were later chased down. 3 of them were wounded and captured, the fourth killed by a sheriff armed with another single shot rifle. The whole episode
illustrates the superourity of rifles over pistols for outside serious events. Also, if shotguns are used at any distance buckshot its needed. There were 2
men with shotguns, one gun wouldn't fire. If both shotguns had buckshot and were firing, probably the gang wouldn't have made it out of town.
