684 IH fuel gauge

I ordered an after market fuel gauge for my 684. Hooked it up. Gauge needle moves all the way over and stays. I'm wondering if you have to have a certain sending unit or if I'm hooking it up wrong. Hot, goes to B. Got the hot from wire on key that only gets hot when you turn the key on. Then Sending wire to the T stud connection. Then A ground wire on the third stud.

What am I doing wrong? Help Please

most fuel gauges work on measuring resistance. resistance changes as float moves up and down. you usually have to have a sender that is in the same ohm range as the gage.

Try disconnecting the wire from the sending unit. If the gauge drops to empty, it's wired correctly. If it stays all the way over, it's wired wrong or the wire from the sender to the sending unit is shorted.

Could be a short to ground in the sending unit, or like hayfarmer said, it's mismatched to the sender. Probably be easier to find a dash gauge that matches the sender than to find and make a universal sending unit work. That is, if your sending unit is good. It can be visually inspected and tested with an ohm meter.

In addition to what has been posted if it is the same set=up tank wise as on a684 we found the arm on the gauge was just a little too long and caught on the inside of the tank. We had to shorten the arm to make it fall down.
