CV Half shaft

Was changing front brake pads on our 2008 Yaris when I noticed grease clumps sprayed on the right brake piston area.
Yes I have a broken boot on the right side CV joint.

Have never changed a CV half shaft before.
Really know little to nothing about them.

So is this something I can do myself without special tools?
What does the job involve?
How long do I have before I will be forced to act on the problem?

I have a air compressor with 1/2 and 3/4 air wrench; and normal tools.
I might be able to rent any special tools needed.

Thanks for the help.

Not sure of that exact model, but generally not too difficult.
It involves disconnecting the lower ball joint, removing the big nut in the center of the hub, pushing the splined shaft out of the hub while swinging the strut assy out. Then the other end pops out of the transmission, comes out with a prybar.

Sometimes the spline shaft needs to be pushed out of the hub with a puller, which can be borrowed or rented.

Best option I have found is to buy a reconditioned half shaft. Trying to get a new boot to stay on and get it clamped properly is near impossible.

But... I'm just giving generalities here, could be completely off base for that particular model. Might look on Youtube or get a manual.

Rockauto will probably be your cheapest source of the drive shaft. I bought the cheapest ones I could find from them for my vw a few years ago and they've got almost as many miles on them now as the original ones did when they failed.

Works for me. I did have to buy a special socket, but it was ready enough to find. Your car will probably be a little different.

If you fix it now you just need to clean and re-grease the CV with the special lube that comes with the new boot,if you wait ,you will buy a new half shaft. It has been better than ten years but we charged 50.00 to do one, even a hundred would be cheaper than fighting one in the drive way for two hours.((Yes I can do one in twenty min, but I did that work for a living and I have the tool to clamp the boot)

don't even replace the boots anymore. I just go grab a rebuilt axle for $100 or less and swap it out.
