Just shake the seed out, dont rake it or harrow it,,leave it alone till its time to pull some turnips,,,,if all goes well.,,,,Thanks for joining me in planting our neighborhood turnip patch...

I should check ours. If they are growing might be time to thin the patch. We plant ours with a plant Jr. planter. I think that's just a tad tight. The last time we had a good year was when we worked the patch under, the survivors got to about 4in round.

I dont thin them .Believe it or not, that little shaker spreads them out just right,,,have to plant around aug 6 ,no earlier, they get worms, they still can, depends on the weather, last year was good, but you never know, sown too thick, they dont do good, and too thin weeds take over

That's the difference between broadcast seeding and row planting. With the shaker yours are spread out more. The planter can only feed so slow which is still to fast for turnips, so they get crowded(when near a inch or two round) and need thinning. This close allows worms(problem most years for us) to chew directly from one to the next, ruining the whole lot. We plant early so that they are in if we get busy, and so we hopefully have something for market.

Been having a cooler year this year so the worms shouldn't be to bad.
