Baling story

Some of you may remember me asking about baling 120 miles from home, and what to charge. Well, turns out I couldn't hold up my end
of things. Tried loading the baler on the trailer, and no matter how I did it, the baler kept trying to fall off the trailer.
Well, it actually did fall off twice. Long story, but I finally got it loaded and chained down. Hauled it all the way out to
Chadron, 120 miles. Get things unloaded, and the baler fell off the ramp as I was unloading it. Get fired up, and about 2/3s of a
round, it shears both needles, and the 2 stuffer fingers. Don't think it was related. Anyway, I am done. I only paid $300 for the
baler, 4 years ago, and am not going to spend the money on new needles, stuffer fingers, and rebuilt the pickup, just not worth
it.
Mark, the guy that I am working for comes out as I am loading up and asks what is wrong. Probably not the best thing to ask
someone that has hauled 120 miles and only baled 27 bales, but I tell him, as I finish chaining down. He asks what he owes me, and
I say, the $250 to get me out there, plus 50 cents per bale, so 268. He writes the check, and is FUMING about who to get to bake
his hay. I don't care, I am broke down and 120 miles from home.
As I get on the high way, I calm down enough to call him back, and tell him that if he can't find anyone with a small baler, to
get someone to round bale it, and I will swap him ton for ton. My little squares, for his rounds. When I finally quit talking, he
says one of his neighbors is on his way over, with a square baler, and things are working out great.
I get home, and there is NO WAY I can cash his check. It wasn't his fault that MY baler broke. So I mailed his check back, along
with a note telling him, I am just not the type of person that can do that. Well, today there is a check in the mail for $100, and
a note saying how nice it was of me to send his back, but he would really like for me to accept his check towards my fuel.
There is still hope for humanity!! Oh, the 830 COM Case performed flawlessly

After reading your story, I feel you did the right thing returning the check. It wasn't the guys fault the problems you had. I do a little custom work and if I had a problem and couldn't do the job I would just pull out and eat the loss, in most cases. Although it would have to be something special for me to travel 120 miles one way.
