This weeks Darwin Award nominee is....

A Yellowstone bison tried to help nominate a 43-year-old Mississippi woman for the 2015 Darwin Award. The woman suffered minor injuries when she turned her back on the unamused bison in an attempt to take a selfie. The bison did exactly what you would expect, tossing the woman with a head butt. The woman and her family said they read the warnings, but they saw other Darwin candidates close to the bison and thought it would be alright. A park press release states this is the fifth person injured after approaching bison in the park this year.

I had a Bison walk right up to me at Yellowstone. I was doing as I was supposed to. I pulled my snowmobile over to the right and stopped. The Bison were supposed to keep plodding along on the other side. They did, until one decided that he wanted to get on the sled with me. As he came towards me I shifted my camera to my left hand, and when he got about four feet away I pressed the shutter button. He stopped, and I squeezed the throttle and took off.

A lot of the boneheads that visit Yellowstone think the bison and other animals are tame.

They're not. We humans are invading the animals' natural habitat.

I read that, too, Randy. Makes you shake your head, doesn't it? On occasion, we have had bull moose in our area in the fall during the rut. Anytime we went to view them, I always kept my distance. Everyone else gives me that (whut the heck is wrong with you?, look.) I just say, "I can see him just fine from here". They shake their head at me. However, I can say that I have never been chased onto the top of a rock pile or over a fence with a kid in my arms like a couple of guys I know who really should have known better. Had a less than arms length encounter with a magnificent 12 point whitetail buck in Shenandoah National Park a few years ago. The deer actually brushed my arm as he walked by. He didn't pay us the slightest attention, but with two small children with us, it was NOT my idea of something I want to do again, no matter how tame he seemed to be.

In our van I blocked his path to get a good picture. The wife asked me, why does he have his tail up? I said because he's getting ready to take a dump like our cattle use to.

Afterwards wife asked a friend of ours that lives out there and was watching from a distance why he had his tail up? He said because he was getting ticked and about ready to do something about it.

Wife has not forgiven me yet!!

Isn't that the farm that has the burgers at the show? If so I have pictures from years ago of them out in the field.

(quoted from post at 18:41:04 07/23/15) I have always heard 'they have to conserve energy will not run away' in the winter!
Led

I can tell you that they don't get their feet wet in the winter. Whenever they move from one area to another they take the packed roads and go over the bridge.

Last time we were in Yellowstone I saw a couple of guys walk at least a quarter mile across a grassy area to get some close shots of the buffalo standing in some water. Those guys wouldn't have had a chance if some bull charged them to protect his territory. I also saw a guy with a camera get up close and personal with a moose. People must think the wild animals are like friendly puppy dogs.

I remember our school bus ride to the back of Denali Park, we were fortunate to see a grizzly help maintain the prairie dog population. As the bear walked along the road and our bus inched forward, one brilliant photog crouched in the front stairwell snapping pictures. When the bear put his nose to the glass, the driver took off, possibly saving the dudes life.

Moose in rut are known to attack anything!!!!!! I can't remember the name of a book I read by a famous wildlife guy that was attacked and stomped a couple times, and another the moose attacked an evergreen next to him!
