Planting the last of the flowers today. I have a nice pot on the deck (18" off the ground) that is wide and flat and I use it for starting odd seeds for trees or perennials. Things I have never tried before. Last year I could not use it because a good sized toad had dug down inside it and was peering out at me from his hole. I showed him to the girls (stupid move) and was forbidden from using my pot for the summer. I figured he would move on or the cats would get him (they tried, tastes bad). No, as far as I know that fool toad spent the entire summer on the deck, in the pot. Pot has filled with weeds so I put it on the bench just now and guess what? Still there. Long, miserable cold winter and he is still in the pot. He has gotten huge. Easily the biggest toad I have seen around here. Give me quite a start. So the pot is back on the deck. I topped it off with some fresh dirt. Currently he is sitting next to it looking PO'd and you would THINK he would move on, but I suspect he will be back in there shortly making another hole for himself. Kinda cute...as toads go.

He'll catch a million bugs this Summer, when I was growing up we used to sit out on the porch that was concrete in the Summer evenings/nights talk, shell peas, eat watermelon, whatever.Anyway there were several huge old toads that used to come up on the porch with us every night we'd see them snap a bug every now and then.Guess they spent the days under the edge of the porch and then join us at night.Great memeories with the family on that porch I still never bother or hurt a toad if I can help it.

Fed June bugs to a huge toad at grandmother's in the evenings. Toad would get so full that they could not swallow the last one. Sometimes it could crawl back out and escape. Old memories of the '50-60's.

Toad eventually got hit by the lawn mower. What a mess!

I have heard that a toad will swallow anything that looks like food. Some very naughty boys would cut open shot gun shells and drop pieces of shot in front of the toad and he would stick out his tongue and swallow the shot, He would get so full he could not hop away. I had no part in this cruel act

When I still lived home on the farm I had a nephew, maybe 4 or 5 years old that spent a lot of time there. The kid was nuts about toads, he'd work all day turning over rocks and boards catching toads, then he kept them in one of grandma's basement window wells. When he wasn't catching toads he was finding bugs and worms to feed them.

Or a hot cigarette butt. Doesn't take a toad long to decide he's not into smoking. Of course I too was only an unwitting witness to such cruelty.
