In times past many family members would refer where the "sign" was before many things. As an example older friend would not have any medical procedure done unless the sign was correct. For example say one was going to have knees replaced, as I recall the sign should be lower than the body part. Say sign should be in legs or the feet. Certainly not in the head or say the heart. Ok fellows what is the facts as you recall them???

In times past... People would rely on lunar, solar, and natural events to determine weather patterns, planting seasons, etc. Simply because they didn't have access to calendars, records, or accurate forecasts.

That all sounds reasonable and harmless, using what you and others observe to make decisions and hope for the best.

But I personally would be very careful not to go any further, and certainly wouldn't stake any decision on astrological signs, old wives tales, or signs from ??? ! Especially concerning something as critical as health decisions!

That can be bordering on sorcery! Just my opinion...

Steve, I agree. I have always questioned the use of "the signs", My grandparents used them to plant crops, when to butcher an animal, etc. My Dad would laugh and say, "Rather than plant in the signs, you get better results if you plant in the ground!" But, seriously, as you mentioned, the signs of the Zodiac were developed by ancient civilizations, especially used by the Romans and Greeks, and are based on superstitions and mythological creatures. In effect, it does border on sorcery, or to me would fall in the same category. JMHO.

The only thing I ever tried referring to signs or moon phases was cutting brush in the dark of the moon in August.I watched an older gentleman many years ago hustling to mow pasture weeds. I though it was laughable, however others stated how it worked. I had to try it, to my surprise over three years mowing in august different days, it worked. Consequence, maybe, all I know is over three years the brush mowed in august in the dark of the moon did not regrow.

A good friend of mine, now deceased, would not plant any crops unless the moon was "right".

Can't say that his crops did any better than anyone else's.

That's about my total exposure to it.

Dad would always make sure the sign was right to cut the pigs. That way you did not have any bleeders.

A few years ago, when I was weaning some calves, an acquaintance told me that I was doing it all wrong. The moon was in the "belly" so the calves wouldn't prosper after the weaning. I was supposed to wait until the moon was in the "feet" (or maybe legs, I can't remember for sure). In any event, I weaned them for 30 days and then sold them.

Since that time, I never tell the guy when I'm weaning calves.

knife cut calves in a waning moon or at least when the signs are in the feet but never in the twilight or after sun down, dehorn in a waning moon, never when the signs are in the head.

As a kid, I remember dad used to try to plant crops in a certain sign of the moon. I heard others say to use a different sign to plant. So who's "right?" And I always wondered if you had to wait a week for the 'right sign" and it rains, then what?

My dad always weaned calves in the right sign. He claimed they would stay quiet all night. Wrong sign, beller all night.

I often wonder about this after all the moon affects tides do to the gravitational pull of the moon. Maybe there is something to it and it has been proven that the moon's pull does affect the water molecules in the atmosphere

When I had my knee replaced the Doc asked me if I had any objections to having it done on Friday the 13th. I said no, why? He said that you would be shocked at the number of people who won't have surgery on Friday the 13th. I was the only surgery he had for the day. Kinda figured that meant he could take his time. Musta figg'rd right, cause I was walking within 20 minutes out of the recovery room, used the walker twice that night, started out on a cane the next morning, off the cane in three weeks, and cutting firewood in 6 weeks. I've kinda been partial to Friday the 13th ever since. (smile)

Pop always said, I plant my crops in the ground, not in the moon. However, we did pay attention to when the next full moon was in the spring. If you are going to have a late spring frost it will almost always be on or around a full moon.

FIL used to say plant root crops in the dark of the moon. Above ground crops near full. I also heard set corner stones for a building during the dark phase and they will never move.
