Speaking of Deeres Electronics

They need to seriously reconsider their opinions. A good majority of the major automotive innovations in the last 70 years or so are the direct result of backyard tinkerers and hot-rodders.

Looks like they're already doing that to a certain extent. I was talking to the owner of a rebuilt transmission supply company. He was saying the new Ford truck automatic transmissions are assigned a code specific to the truck it was installed in. Without the ability to read the code, and transfer it to the new transmission, it won't work. So far only the dealer has the equipment to do that, and they won't share!

Well, maybe we ought to stop buying these electrical nightmares and go back to the way they used to be built, simple enough to work on. All this electrical stuff they put on them now days is just a waste of time and money. Drivers are more interested in playing with all the gadgets and not paying attention to their driving anyway.

John Deer actually argued to the court that the farmer does not OWN the tractor only owns a license to use it for its life, now explain that one.

We run in to that when replacing air bag monitors and ecm units. The units are not programmed and need to be taken to the dealer to be flashed. Pia!!!

The hell with that. If I hold the title to a car then it's mine to do whatever I want with it. If I want to set it on fire then nobody can stop me.
I have a friend who works on VWs and he said almost the same thing; it's getting harder and harder for him to work on the newer ones because of all the electronic crap that only the dealer has the code for.
That needs to be beaten down and changed, and fast.

Why are there no "intellectual property rights" on engineering drawings (like software engineering) and therefore on the products made from them like cars and machinery and tractors (or application programs)?

Using the same "intellectual property rights" arguments then we couldn't re-sell our used vehicles or even drill holes in them to mount accessories to. Doesn't it cost millions and millions of dollars to design and re-engineer new cars every year?

Maybe this is more about power. Power corrupts so maybe the people who run the software companies are just using whatever excuse they can get away with to weld some arbitrary power over others.

Shouldn't somebody be paying royalties to whoever "created" the car whenever one is sold? Or maybe we should be paying the "bootleg" taxes (like on blank DVD's or CD's) on machinery in case we use it to make a copy of something?
